Searching for definitions from all quarters.
Not long ago I read C. S. Lewis’ book The Abolition of Man. He took the position that morality is knowable to reasoning minds, and thus certain basic principles of morality are known equally to people of disagreeing religions or of no religion.Something is immoral if it is against God’s will or intention for a particular thing. Like how having sex before marriage is against God’s intention for sex. Killing one another is against God’s intention for us, etc.
But, all definitions rely on an ordered universe, which leads to beaumains’s response. Not long ago I read C. S. Lewis’ book The Abolition of Man. Do we all have the same innate sense? We all have an inate sense of what is right and wrong
To be moral entails that there is an expectation of obligation; that all human beings must act according to the precept or standard.Searching for definitions from all quarters.
I would agree, because of Natural Law, which is about how things are meant to function in a moral sense. The Natural Law is part of God’s law, or an expression of His will, that is observable through reason. So, my point still stands. Not long ago I read C. S. Lewis’ book The Abolition of Man. I would suggest no. But there are a lot of common areas e.g don’t killDo we all have the same innate sense?
Intentions - interesting way of stating God’s will. I lke it.Something is immoral if it is against God’s will or intention for a particular thing. Like how having sex before marriage is against God’s intention for sex. Killing one another is against God’s intention for us, etc.
Interesting, so if we remove God from the equation thus evil. We view moral/immoral from say an atheist perspective. What defines moral/immoral. There’s no boundary without a paradigm. Thoughts? An intention or decision is evil if it prevents or diminishes physical, intellectual, social, or spiritual development and fulfilment. It is the antithesis of divine love…
I don’t think there is an ‘atheist’ perspective on morality. ‘Atheism’ is not an organisation or a club, with an agenda. It is a view point.Interesting, so if we remove God from the equation thus evil. We view moral/immoral from say an atheist perspective. What defines moral/immoral. So cannibals are moral? They too evolved through natural selection. What brings moral out of natural selection?I don’t think there is an ‘atheist’ perspective on morality. ‘Atheism’ is not an organisation or a club, with an agenda. It is a view point.
I would suggest that morality is innate to Humans and forms part of the human condition and it has evolved that way.![]()
That’s a good point, too.I would expand upon Beaumains statement concerning the act’s nature. An act’s nature can make it immoral no matter what. Thus an act of adultery is always immoral. However, a good act can be made immoral by the intent of the one who performs the act. Let us say that someone gives money to an orphanage. That in itself is a good act. If the one giving the money wants only to alleviate the want of the orphans, then that would be moral. If, however, he is doing it to get his picture in the paper so everyone can praise him , then theact would be immoral.
