whats a “Katsop?”
“Katsop” mean “old goat” and is derogatory term that has been used by Polish Roman Catholics and by Byzantine and Ruthenian Catholics when referring to the Orthodox, espcially the clergy because of the full beards that are often worn by the priests.

The inference was that the beards made them look like old goats…

hope this helps…

In that case, it’s surprising that the term is still in use. 😦

Defense of Orthodox priests

Such terms for mock Orthodox priests are very widespread in Poland and Western Ukraine. There is a site recommended by a user of this forums, site called Forums Zaglobae Domini (which is Polish site to encourage Catolicism). At this unforunate Polish but Russian language site, we find one writer who said

и вообще все православные священники - козлы бородатые (and in general all Orthodox priests are bearded goats).

This is such current site where can be found this remark:

The word is actually "Kacap (Katsap). In the Rusyn and Ukrainian languages, a “cap/tsap” is a goat. “katsap” is by definition “a goat that goes astray”.

In America during the bitter court cases of the 1930’s among the American Greek Catholic Churches, two derogatory labels were used against those favoring leaving the Greek Catholic Church under Rome and those not in favor of leaving the Greek Catholic Church under Rome; “Celbat” and “Katsap”. If you were not in favor of leaving the Greek Catholic Church under Rome, you were labeled a “Celbat”(one who supported the discontiuation of married clergy among the Rusyn and Ukrainian Greek Catholic Churches). If you favored breaking the Uniate Union w/Rome because Rome enforced a ban on married clergy in America, you were labeled a “Katsap” (one who strays from the Greek Catholic Church under Rome).

In Western PA “Katsap” was often spelled and pronounced “Cuts-up”. FYI.

…and yes, lengend has it that the H.J. Heinz Co. heard the word “katsap” used so often it Pittsburgh that they used that name for their tomato-based condiment.

I relish the tenor of these debates. My condiments to the both of you.👍
Sigh. I guess we’d best pepper ourselves for more of these jokes. Mayo we see the end of them soon…

I’ve heard that ketchup was originally a fermented fish sauce and had zilch-squat to do with tomatoes. But there is something fishy about katsop as an insult, for sure.

…Mayo + “Katsap” = Great Russian Dressing
