What does Mother of God mean to you?

I keep it simple.

Word is God.
Jesus is the Word made flesh.
Jesus was born of the Virgin Mary.
Jesus is the Son of Mary.
Therefore, Mary is the Mother of God (the Second Person of the Trinity).

Non-Catholic Christians please reframe from using the word blasphemy when you heard this title. This title is Christocentric because Jesus is God, and since Mary is the Mother of Jesus, she is also the Mother of God.

is christ God or son of God? give proofs from bible plz

JustinApologist, to me Mother of God means what you posted. It’s what I’ve learned through Catholic teachings. I don’t usually say it like that, though–usually Mother of Jesus (because my young child asks questions relating to Jesus and Mary, and it’s easier to explain it that way for now).

**Edited to delete off-topic thoughts…will post on another thread. 🙂

he said that blessed mary i mother of God bec christ is God ,now i ask him to proof
Let me ask you this then. Are you really interested in proof, or are you just here to stir the pot. I’ve seen proof being presented to you countless times and you simply dismiss it b/c you have your own version of the proof. Which is why I kinda suggest you open a new thread for your muslim propaganda 🙂

what had been told bychristians to be taken out of context

Jesus was born through Mary.
Therefore the Mother of God. The Father and son are one.

Yep, justin, makes sense to me! It’s a sweet mystery that I’ll never fully understand, but I “get” it in as much as my puny little mind will let me. 😛

Not sure what you mean by this.

More importantly, you didn’t answer my question. Are you here to try to learn and understand Christian belief or just for muslim propaganda?
It strongly feels like the latter.

Jesus was born through Mary.
Therefore the Mother of God. The Father and son are one.
So since the Father and Son are ONE… then, Mary is the Mother of the Father and the Son. 🤷

John 10:30 I and [my] Father are one.

Jesus is God.
Mary is His mother.
Mary is the Mother of God. 👍

Mary is not the source of the Trinity. Mary is not the originator of the divinity of God. But she is the mother of Jesus Christ. She gave birth to His humanity, and that humanity is hypostatically united to the divinity of Christ. Thus, Mary is the Mother of God.

Hello,
is christ God or son of God? give proofs from bible plz
Jesus Christ is the Second Person of the Blessed Trinity. He is God. Jesus Christ is the Son of the living God.

He is the one Lord Jesus Christ, the only begotten Son of the Father, born of the Father before all ages. God of God, Light of Light, true God of true God. Begotten not made, consubstantial to the Father, by whom all things were made. Who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven. And was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and of the Virgin Mary and was made man; was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate, suffered and was buried; and the third day rose again according to the Scriptures. And ascended into heaven, sits at the right hand of the Father, and shall come again with glory to judge the living and the dead, of whose Kingdom there shall be no end. (Nicene Creed - section on the Second Person of the Trinity)

It is necessary to everlasting Salvation, that we also believe rightly the Incarnation of our Lord Jesus Christ. For the right Faith is, that we believe and confess, that our Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of God, is God and Man. God, of the substance of the Father, begotten before the worlds; and Man, of the substance of His mother, born into the world. Perfect God and Perfect Man, of a reasonable Soul and human Flesh subsisting. Equal to the Father as touching His Godhead, and inferior to the Father as touching His Manhood. Who, although He be God and Man, yet He is not two, but One Christ. One, not by conversion of the Godhead into Flesh, but by taking of the Manhood into God. One altogether, not by confusion of substance, but by Unity of Person. For as the reasonable soul and flesh is one Man, so God and Man is one Christ. Who suffered for our salvation, descended into Hell, rose again the third day from the dead. He ascended into Heaven, He sitteth on the right hand of the Father, God Almighty, from whence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. At whose coming all men shall rise again with their bodies, and shall give account for their own works. And they that have donegood shall go into life everlasting, and they that have done evil into everlasting fire. (Athanasian Creed - section on the Incarnation)

As a Muslim, would you even give a shred of credence to the Bible or Sacred Tradition? If so - here.

So since the Father and Son are ONE… then, Mary is the Mother of the Father and the Son. 🤷

John 10:30 I and [my] Father are one.
As they have pointed out to you, it really is more simple (and more complex) than this.

If Jesus Christ is fully divine, (and He is) then because Mary is His mother, (By God’s own choice) then she is indeed the mother of God. Mary would not have to give birth to the whole Trinity in order for this to be true, since Our Lord is as equally divine in nature as the father and the Holy Spirit. So she is without question the Mother of God.

However…Jesus is not the same person as either the Father or the Holy Spirit. This is a fundamental belief of all Christian religions.

The Trinity is three distinct persons and yet each one of those three is fully, and completely, 100% divine. They share the same divine nature, but they are not the same persons. Else why would they have said “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness;…” in Genesis 1:26? This is the three persons of the Trinity in conversation.

You have misinterpreted the meaning of the verse you are referring to and therein lies your error.

The Blessed Virgin is the Mother of God in that she is the mother of the Lord Jesus Christ. She is not the mother of the Father or the Holy Spirit, as she did not birth either of those persons of the Trinity.

It bears pointing out the reason for this title. Some heretics (Nestorians) were claiming that Jesus’ Divinity and humanity were separate and that therefore Mary only bore in her womb and gave birth to His humanity. But of course, the truth is that His humanity and divinity are inseparable and Mary therefore also bore His divinity in her womb along with His humanity.

The only thing I don’t grasp is when fellow Christians do not acknowledge that Mary is the Mother of God.

I only have a few questions that Tim Staples ask a Protestant minister who have a difficulty grasping this title.
  1. If Mary is not the Mother of God, how can Jesus be God?
  2. Is not Jesus God?
  3. Is not Jesus the Second Person of the Trinity?
If you answer to all three questions is yes, that Jesus is God but Mary is not the Mother of God. Then you put yourself in a false dichtomy because Jesus is God, and he has two nature, One Human, One Divine.

To say that Mary is not the Mother of God, then Jesus must have one nature instead of two. It is basic Christology that Jesus has two natures, One human, One divine. Because Jesus is True God and True Man.

Mary isn’t the Mother of the Trinity since only One Person of the Trinity became flesh, the Word, Jesus Christ became Word incarnate. The Father, and the Holy Spirit didn’t became flesh.

For in Mary, Jesus became Man.

I hope this helps.

It is even simpler than that.
The triune God has no mother.
Yes he does. Mary. Look, you are thinking that “Mother” means existed before God and somehow a creator of God. The term Mother of God does not mean that, but means she was the Mother of the Second Person of the Trinity when He became man.

That is why one often sees the terms “Daughter of the Father and Mother of the Son” to describe Mary as well.
