What does Satan do all day?

I know he is the ruler of hell, the prince of darkness, but what duties go with that job?

Does he physically, emotionally torment the souls of those in Hell?

Does he spend his days trying to get humans to sin and think bad thoughts to join his large subterranean BBQ?

Does he take over peoples bodies? or does he send his subordinates to do that? Does he sit in his hellish throneroom, plotting with his advisors his next big move?

I suppose its impossible to really know, I just wondered…

prowls around the world in search of ruin of souls in any manner possible.

Screwtape Letters by CS Lewis is a great read about this topic if you like CS Lewis.

I recently read Interview with an Exorcist and Professor Kreeft’s book on Angels and Demons. From what I gather reading those two books, most demons spend most of their time in intellectual pursuits. They essentially are (to us) super philosophers, scientists, mathematicians, etc. I suspect that, for them, tempting humans is somewhat like an intellectual pursuit. It’s the ultimate in game theory and strategy. They attempt to figure out complex chains of causality to result in their desired effect. For instance, if they want to tempt a particularly holy person, they might have to first tempt other people to do things which would lead to that holy person choosing to do something sinful.

Also, focusing on intellectual pursuits involving the material world allows them to think about things that one can easily consider without explicitly pondering God. That’s one thing I find interesting. It would be ironic if, having scorn for material creatures, but possessing keen intellects with obsessive desire to uncover knowledge, the subjects that allow them to pursue those ends all derive from the material world.

According to Judaism, Satan is not a fallen angel; he is instead an angel who serves G-d. However, he does the “dirty work.” That is, he tempts us in order to test our free will, but, together with G-d, he does not want us to fall into temptation. In addition to his role as Tempter, he is believed to be the Accuser at the time of our death. He forces us to defend the morality of our lives before G-d in the Holy Tribunal. In effect, we judge ourselves by means of Satan’s prompting although it is G-d who passes final judgment and sentences us. His third role is that of the Angel of Death, who, after G-d sentences us, escorts us to our final destination. So you see Satan has his hands full; he is never bored.

But they surely must engage in torturing the residents of Hell?

Also, what kind of people to the demons possess? I have heard it tends to be people with deep wounds ( childhood sexual/phsyical/emotional abuse) or people who stray into the occult i.e tarot cards/ ouija boards.

I have heard some crayz stories about ouija boards spinning around wildly, or giving creepy answers. Same with Tarot cards. I have played them just once. I asked it about my future, thinking it was just a silly card game. “The Cards” came up with, different location, beautiful woman, and a lot of money. Very vague and imprecise, though not a bad future if true.

That being said, did I commit a sin by playing that? Have I opened my life open to evil spirits?

I think he must spend most of his time in Washington, D.C.
So much to do, so little time…

Hi,
very good questions. Problem with satan (and God) is that we have way more questions about them than we have answers. Demons are rebels, they didn’t want to submit to God, then why the hell do they submit so perfectly to Satan? Does he govern them all with fear, is he like a tyrant that no demon dares contradict? How much knowledge does Satan actually have? Can he be present at more than one place simultaneously? Does he know my name, does he have a faint idea of what my (mediocre) life has been like? Or, when we are tempted, we are tempted by different demons, but not by Satan himself? Sometimes you hear some people, and they almost portray Satan as God (omniscient and omnipresent—> ubiquity), but given over to evil.

First time I found out the Ouija game was available at ToysRus, I was:eek:. Satan and evil are mysteries, what I’ve heard is that by doing certain things, you open yourself up to him, you’re like beckoning him, sort of. But if you really want to open yourself to Satan, be angry and bitter with God, hate people, refuse absolutely to forgive some people, go into rage fits, desecrate the eucharist, make a satanic pact, enroll in the church of Satan, and Satan will come into your life big time. Also, do not underestimate the resentment that some people who were abused as children harbor.

So much to do, so little time…
Puts confusion in the minds of as many people as possible:shrug: And does his dirtiest to discredit the Catholic Church. He hates that most of all since Jesus founded it and it stands in the way of him controlling the world.

Political correctness is surely one of his tactics. Don’t speak out about what is sinful, you might offend certain people.

According to the Exorcist who wrote that book I mentioned, demons typically possess people who participate in the occult. There are people God allows demons to possess that are saintly, but that is rare.

He said if you are a faithful Catholic who goes to regular confession and mass, then God grants you the armor against being overly harassed, and is not likely to allow a demon to possess your body. I don’t remember anything about people with deep wounds, though. It might be the case that people who fall into the occult tend to suffer from deep wounds which contribute to their falling into that life to begin with.

One thing that disturbed me though was the thought that many of us are possessed with the quiet types of demons and therefore are unlikely to find out.

I think right now they prefer to be in Hell as little as possible and much rather be roaming the earth. They only have the time the earth exists, and when it ceases to, they will be locked in hell forever so they try to do as much damage now as they can.

Interesting question, although it’s rather like asking “What do dogs do all day?” isn’t it? It assumes the human experience of time, space, and occupation.

It seems, from Job 1:7-12 that Satan spends some time on earth, watching people, and some time in the presence of God with other angels.

Ashamed to admit, but in my younger years I did fool with a Ouija board not knowing how dangerous it could be. Turned out to be the most horifying experience of my life. The one thing good that did come of it is that I am now 100% there is an afterlife, demons exist and Hell is real. I cannot put in words how it must feel to be disconnected from God and Love and never have the chance to repent.
