What does science not know?

I did not realize anyone had anthropomorphized evolution. Is that not saying the same thing as “God did it!”??

I am not sure, but there seems to be two general options:
A. the movement from inanimate happened by chance/accident/chaos/haphazard mistakes and so forth (evolution seems to cover chance, accident and chaos).

B. The movement is caused by a Being(s). Whether the Being or beings still exist would still be up for investigation. (I BELIEVE IN ONE GOD, THE FATHER.) SCIENCE SHOULD MAKE USE OF THIS INFORMATION and common sense.)

C. The movement did not happen, but animate and inanimate beings were made/created at the same time.

D. Variations on the first two ideas.

Going with this idea for a moment, I’ve got a question of how to classify whether an instance of something is animate or inanimate. I am assuming (possibly incorrectly) that “animate” here is means having life. The line seems clear for some examples (ex: a brick vs a dog) but there also seem to be some instances of replicating objects for which this isn’t so clear.

These could include crystals, some proteins, viruses, and some protozoa. Would these be considered animate or inanimate in the context of this discussion?

My questioning is not living being moving over to primitive living being. It is possible that it did not happen.

The human ability to reason and think should not limit itself to just math and the physical sciences. Human reason created logic, math, the physical sciences and common sense. Common sense and logic has to be encouraged to address it. Common sense and logic yell, it is impossible to move from no life all the way to interior consciousness by chance, accidents, mistakes and other haphazard causes.

If chance, accidents, mistakes and haphazard causes caused all the life that we observe, then it is not reasonable. It is “chanceable,” “mistakeable,” “accidental,” and “haphazardable.” It is by no means logical. Then we should not use logic to figure it out. Our logic cannot figure it out–because it is not logical. Therefore math and science are in a domain where they do not belong. They should go back to the labs and forget about chance, mistakes, accidents, and haphazard past events.

We do not know the size of the universe, the intrinsic nature of the laws of physical science, the origin of these laws and the order in which they developed. Did they exist before, during or after the Big Bang?

Did the laws that govern life evolve?

If they evolved, how?

The questions are jillions upon jillions.

We do not know enough to even answer how life began.

I believe in One God, the maker of Heavens and Earth.

Jillions is a real word.

These are really fundamental questions that have to be honestly and accurately addressed.

Sounds like you are asking about confidence levels in expressions.

Some sources include confidence information others don’t. If you are getting information from popular publications or the news they tend to present information with a more definite higher degree of confidence than the paper published by those that did the work on a topic. Something like “a correlation was found between X and Y with strength Z” might be presented in the news as something like “We now know that Y [may] cause X!” There’s two different levels of confidence being communicated there.

If the audience receiving some information already understand that the information is provisional then further expressions of the provisional nature of the data may be redundant.

When I’ve seen information presented in a medical context there’s usually more information expressed about something not being absolute. Such as the “70% of the people with your condition and background that underwent this procedure recovered”

If it’s in a young child’s science book confidence qualifiers don’t seem to be present (I’m trying to get my hands on an updated science book for children to check some other things out). I speculate because some children may not have gotten an understanding for statistics.

Proteins are certainly NOT alive, at least not according to any reasonable definition of life (something else we scientists have not quite figured out). Protozoa are certainly life. Viruses are decidedly an uncertain category. You will find competent people going both ways.

To disregard all of science because of randomness is to misunderstand fundamental ideas. As a scientist, I embrace the fact that there is randomness inherent in everything I do. I repeat experiments. I never stop once it has been successful once. I tell my peers how confident I am that the results are correct. I acknowledge that in my field, we typically allow for a 5% chance that the results are a pure fluke. The more that people repeat and extend and confirm, that probability decreases.

There is a mathematical axiom known as the law of large statistics. If your sample size is large enough (approaching infinity), then the sample man approaches the population mean. For the existence of life, we have a sample size of 1. It tells us nothing about the probability of life forming, just that here it did. We would need to check every single planet and moon in the universe to get toward the true probability.

Please also don’t forget that without accidents, mistakes, and haphazard events, we would now have X-rays, penicillin, or a host of other discoveries. Sometimes the most important scientific discoveries are not the result of experiments, but someone saying, “Now that’s kinda funny . . .”

Yes, these are all fundamental questions that must be honestly and accurately addressed. We all want to know the answers. Patience is a virtue. We don’t have good answers right now. Scientists are working with the tools they have, and are developing new tools, to figure out the answers as best they can. They may find that life developed out of a watery soup of organics. They may find God. They may find that God stirred the soup. As a scientists, we have to be willing to accept God as a potential explanation. I personally have no idea how to experimentally determine God.

Maybe that’s why I stay in my lab.

I think you just proved that it’s impossible to commit the sin of pride :).

But surely this is playing with words - the truth is that if we are certain we’re certain then our mind is closed while if we are certain we’re doubtful then our mind is open.

We are not the lord of nature and so we cannot ordain how nature behaves, therefore we cannot be certain of what it will do.
I just finished watching The Magician’s Twin on YouTube. It is a documentary about CS Lewis’ view on scientism and the limits of scientific knowledge.

Well worth watching.

There are two thoughts that your post triggered in my mind.

1) The Euthyphro dilemma can be applied to ourselves epistemologically.

Are things good because God wills them or does God will them because they are good. Thomism argues that it is not either/or but both/and.

As it pertains to knowledge:

Are things true because God knows them or does God know them because they are true?

Thomism, again, would argue, “Why can’t it be both?”

As pertains to human knowledge:

Are things true because we know them to be true or do we know them to be true because they are true?

This may seem a vacuous statement, but it seems to me that both would have to obtain if true human knowledge were possible.

**2) Knowledge of other persons, in a subjective sense, has to be of a fundamentally different kind of knowledge from scientific knowledge. **We cannot “know” another person as a person by carrying out the scientific method on them.

The reason is because to be motivated do so fundamentally entails an attempt to control or manipulate them in some way and, therefore, is an infringement of their dignity.

Here’s why:

Suppose I invite a friend to attend a gathering. They politely refuse. I could continue the conversation by asking why they refused, but what would be my motivation to do so?
To find out the reason for their refusal. Okay, but again, what would be my motivation to know that?

It seems to break down to two possibilities. Either

A) to persuade them to change their mind and so to attempt to override their decision by persuasion, i.e., to manipulate their choice in some way
B) to simply get to know them better as a person; to find out what moves them.

To be motivated by the second possibility and only the second entails an implicit respect for the autonomy of the other person. However, to be moved by the first possibility seems to entail a kind of disrespect for the autonomy of the other person because the information is sought with the intent of imposing one’s own will on the other.

It seems to me that scientism approaches knowledge about the reality around us, with the assumption of disrespect for its autonomy. That having greater knowledge about the world is, itself, the permission granted to manipulate the world simply because we have grasped it. That assumption is built into another assumption, that the “universe” or what is behind it, is essentially not personal and therefore we have some inherent right to trespass and impose our will on it.

However, why do we have a right to assume that before we find out if, indeed, the universe is ours to do with as we will?

The garden is seemingly unowned and therefore we can trespass and do with it as we will.

Scientism presumes that we do have that right. Lewis’ question here is very important. By what means to we determine the “will” by which we impose change upon the universe as we find out more about it. Surely just knowing how it works, in itself, is insufficient for determining how we will use that knowledge.

Which brings me to the answer to the thread question.

What science cannot tell us is what to do with the knowledge that we gain by means of science. Where does the knowledge to answer that question come from? Is that not an even more fundamental question than any question that science can answer?

A psychologist or psychotherapist would disagree. After all, science is just being systematic. A priest who helps someone by first systematically asking them questions is being scientific.

I think you’re right, it’s motivation not methodology, but no scientist has ever told me I must believe in relativity or go to hell. Yet I’ve recently been told right here on CAF that I’m damned just for having Baptist and not Catholic on my profile (:D!!!).

I think the word scientism has become meaningless since it started to be used pejoratively on anyone who accepts any science at all. Some Christians give the impression we worship ignorance and long to turn back the clock to when disease was caused by demons not microbes.

Imho the reason we trample the garden comes from long before science, from much deeper in our psyche, all the way from Genesis: “fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky and over every living creature that moves on the ground.

And so it came to pass that our entire civilization, our whole way of life, is based on subduing the heck out of everything and everyone. Christians beat back other religions (they burned all the Muslim libraries here in Spain). Western nations colonized the world and called everyone else savages. We rape the ground for gas and oil to drive to the mall.

These days of course, after scientists have stirred our conscience at the damage we’re doing to our planet and to our children’s heritage, we toned it down and talk about stewardship rather than dominion. While continuing to subdue forests to grow burgers. :o

There used to be people who thought differently, there were native Americans who believed everything is sacred, trouble is we subdued 'em all good and proper.

If there is an individual that could merely list all of the basic things that science just does not know, I would love it.

Example: from what was said on this read or similar ones (I cannot recall all of this information) science does not know how matter without life moved to matter with life. We even have trouble discerning what is living.

Example: we do not know the limits of the universe as of yet.

Example: the laws describe but are not what directs nature. We do not know the essence of the laws.

there is a certain kismet in this thread, i was thinking about this too;

‘I know that we get the light from that which we do not know, not from what we know.’

what we don’t know is most interesting.

As far as canada warming up goes, there are fossil crocodiles and palm trees in alaska, inside the arctic circle. Temperatures during winter can reach and stay as low as -60 degrees C.
Crocodiles need temperatures year-round of about 31 degrees to 34 degrees C. So you were looking at a 94 degree C winter/year-round temperature rise in Alaska.

Catastrophic climate change models which include such unnatural causes as human industrial activity globally have only managed to predict a worst case scenario of 3 or 4 degrees C rise in temperatures globally.

So how did crocodiles and palm trees live in the arctic circle without humans warming up the climate (not that that would make any difference). I have a sneaky idea about how they did it though.
Don’t forget the phenomenon of continental drift - Alaska wasn’t always as far north as it is now. There’s also the relative time scale to consider - the 90-degree temperature change occurred over many millions of years. Catastrophic climate change might entail a smaller rise in the numbers, but over a much, much shorter time period, leading to far more dramatic disruption to the climate.

The whole point about climate change is not who or what caused it, but how we are going to manage global resources as climate change progresses.

Are you saying that dreams are proof of god or some other supernatural phenomenon? I’m not sure how far you’d get with that hypothesis.

Do you remember what you dreamed about last night? If you do, then you have some scientific evidence for your dream, through observation.

Snow leopards have only just been definitively filmed and verified. I’ve heard estimates by credible scientists that humans have only identified one million out of six million possible species and subspecies of animals that may exist on this planet.

The elusive God, given that he reportedly is omniscient, omnipotent, immaterial, eternal and much more capable of eluding human detection will likely be undiscovered until well after those five million missing kinds of animals have been identified and tagged. Furthermore, since there, again reportedly, only exists one individual of this being, the odds of discovery without his cooperation are very small. Snow leopards number in the 3-4000 range and remained elusive for years. As far as I can see, scientists are not very keen on finding God in any case.

Yes, I know, scientists haven’t found the Flying Spaghetti Monster, either. On the other hand, they haven’t put much effort into it. Well, perhaps SETI …

If God is highly capable of eluding human detection as you say then He is a trickster, a great deceiver.
