What does Scripture mean when it talks about Scripture?

When the word ‘scripture’ is mentioned in the Gospels, it can’t mean anything in the New Testament, including the Gospels, right? It is only referring to the OT, right?
All of the mentions of the word ‘scripture’ seem to talk about it either a) being fullfilled or b) Jesus is asking if you’ve read them and of course both scenarios would suggest that what is being discussed is OT.
I have friends who claim differently, but I don’t know how you can talk about reading something which hasn’t been written yet!!

Scripture is the word of God. All scripture is from the mouth of God and holy men were moved by the holy spirit to write, and that is what is called scripture.

2 Peter 1:20
Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation.[Meaning, the bible was not written by any mans wisdom or knowledge, and that all the words are certified by God] [21] For the prophecy came **not **in the old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.

Though the New testament was still being written, what was eventually written would be from the mouth of God, and so it would be considered scripture.

Compare Scripture to Scripture.

Is 28:10 For precept must be upon precept, precept upon precept, line upon line, line upon line, here a little, there a little.

Is 28:13 But the word of the Lord was to them, “Precept upon precept, precept upon precept, line upon line, line upon line, here a little there a little,” That they might go and fall backward, and be broken and snared and caught.

1 Cor 2:13 These things we also speak, not in words which man’s wisdom teaches, but which the Holy Spirit teaches, comparing spiritual things with spiritual.

An important message in the bible is the parable of the faithful Boreans. Who accepted the word readily and searched the scripture daily to see if the things they had been told were true. This is proof showing mankind that the ultimate authority is the scripture, which is the word of God, and to search the scripture, by comparing scripture to scripture, or spiritual things to spiritual things, as the scripture is spiritual, as is the nature of God, who is eternal spirit.

Acts 17:11 These were more fair minded than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness, and searched the Scriptures daily to find out whether these things were so.

How did they search, they compared scripture to scripture, and by comparing you get harmony between verses that may seem to contradict each other, you compare them and try to understand what God is telling us. The faithful Boreans are our example of how we are to study the bible.

Yes, “Scripture” in the bible means the Old Testament.

Of course, today, we use the word to mean the Old AND New Testament.

In the New Testament books, when they refer to “Scripture” or to “the Scriptures,”
what is being referred to is the books of the Old Testament,
as the New Testament had not been gathered together yet and would not be
in an agreed upon canon, for another 300 years or so.
However, Saint Peter, in his Letters, refers to at least some of the writings of Paul as Scripture by juxtaposing them with “the other scriptures” which the untaught and unlearned twist to their own destruction.
