What Does She Need To Do To Come Back?

:confused: Hello All,

My secretary…

Born and raised Catholic, baptized, confirmed, went to Catholic schools.

She is 54 years old. She was first married in 1974 in the Catholic Church, divorced in 1976 (he was abusive) She was 20-22 years old during this timeframe. There are no children from this marriage.

She remarried in a non-denominational church and did not get an annulment from her first marriage. Her current (2nd) husband is Lutheran but not practicing. She has been married 31 years to this man and currently has three grown children from this marriage.

Her oldest child was in CCD when the Associate Pastor at her Catholic church called her (5-7-ish years after her first marriage) and told her to stop receiving the sacraments- due to gossip that apparently got back to him. Yes, she is probably also guilty of profaning the Eucharist in the long ago past, in addition to the marriage issues at hand.

As a result, she pulled her oldest child out of CCD and proceeded to leave the Church.

After all this time, she has developed a yearning to return to the Church.

How does she get back into the full life of Catholic Church? What does she need to do become a member in good standing and be eligible to receive the Sacraments, after things that transpired over 30 years ago?

I’d like to help her come home… Thanks in advance…
 
She needs to make an appointment with a priest in a local parish, lay out all the facts, and follow his advice.

He will help her begin a the process to file a petition for a decree of nullity for her first marriage and convalidation of her current marriage.
 
And if and when her annulment comes through, she makes a good confession and once again is able to receive the sacraments fully. In the meantime, there is nothing to prohibit her from going to mass every Sunday. In fact, she should be doing that already, however she must abstain from receiving the Holy Eucharist until her annulment is declared. catholicscomehome.org/former-Catholic.phtml
