Dancing itself is not sinful. But, as with anything, it CAN be depending on the way in which it is done. As to why SOME Protestants believe that it can be… I THINK it’s an over zealous reaction to what they see as being improper coupled with guilt (from some) over the lust that some many experience as a result. I suppose, in their minds, that it’s better to be safe than sorry, which is why those same Protestants also often claim that playing cards or drinking anything alcoholic is also a sin. They don’t trust themselves not to have lustful thoughts, gamble, or get drunk, so it’s better to say that these activities are all sinful rather than risk the temptation of sinning. What they don’t apply this to is food… gluttony is a sin, but eating is not… yet they don’t take it to that extreme.🤷

The Catholic Church does not condemn all dancing; the Catechism of the Catholic Church, in paragraph 1674, mentions “religious dances” as an expression of popular piety.

The Bible says that, when the Ark of the Covenant was brought into Jerusalem, good King David “danced before the Lord with all his might.” (2 Samuel 6:14)

Psalm 149:1-3 says, "Praise the LORD! Sing to the LORD a new song, his praise in the assembly of the faithful! Let Israel be glad in his Maker, let the sons of Zion rejoice in their King! Let them praise his name with dancing, making melody to him with timbrel and lyre!

The Bible also says that wicked King Herod was so pleased with the dance that his step-daughter did before him and his company that he recklessly swore to give her anything she wanted and, at her wicked mother’s urging, she asked for the head of John the Baptist and because of his oath he had John the Baptist beheaded. (Matthew 14:6-11)

The Protestant tradition of bannig all dancing originated with Calvin in Geneva. This resulted in what Belloc called “The war on Joy”.

What are you talking about? Dancing is fine.

Nothing. Obviously any lewd behavior is a sin, but if it is not lewd or an incitement to lust, then it would be ok.

Calgar, you and I have been through this before. There are many baptists (and other denominations) groups here in Southeast Texas who will tell you that dancing is sinful, “for it leads to sex”.

Do you remember the movie “Footloose”?

Footloose…footloose…I’ll have to googlel that one. 😛

The OP asked if protestants thought dancing is bad. I, as a southern baptist, replied that we do not. I’m actually quite good (in my own mind).

Others have brought up the point that lewd dancing can be innappropriate, which is true.

In the past my roman catholic commander has banned dancing due to this fact.

Man, down is up and up is down.

I spent my high school years going to CYO (Catholic Youth Organization) dances. There was no ban on public dancing at all.

However, my baptists brothers told me repeatedly that their preachers taught that all dancing was sinful, for it led to sex.

So, I really don’t know where you are coming from, Calgar.

To everything there is a season…

**“4 …**A time to weep,
And a time to laugh;
A time to mourn,
And a time to dance…”

Ecclesiates 3:1-8 (see verse 4)

King David Danced in front of the Ark of the Covenant and you didn’t sin in-front of Ark of the Covenant or you were in big trouble.
