What does the bible really say about drinking? I was raised with a very negative view of alcohal. I was raised non-denominational but I am constantly reading in the bible and through out religious history of many great Christain men and women who drunk wine, beer, etc. What is the Church’s position?

Dear Yellow,

There is nothing intrinsically evil about alcohol. The Book of Genesis tells us that all that God created is good. Jesus multiplied wine as His first miracle, to say nothing of using wine for the Eucharist. Suspicion of alcohol is a hang up for some Protestants, but certainly not for Catholics. To drink of the fruit of the vine is a good thing—in moderation, of course.
