What does the church actually teach about women wearing trousers?

I am having a discussion with someone who thinks that the only proper attire for women who are catholic are skirts/dresses and that women should never be involved in sporting events. I know that there have been Popes and Cardinals that have said such things but what is the actual Church position on this in the present day? Is there one?
