What does the Church teach about Self Defense?

Thank you for your help.

I was in a rather heated discussion about the Church’s position on self defense. The situation in our discussion was someone that might break into your home. In the eyes of the church, is the defense of the home owner (even to the point of killing the intruder) justified/Ok? I would really appreciate biblical references.
