What does the Immaculate Conception mean?

Please explain the immaculate conception to me. I always though it meant that Mary was a virgin when she became pregnant with Jesus. Now I understand that the immaculate conception means that Mary was born without original sin. Where can I find this in the Bible or does the Bible even mention it? Is this a Catholic conception?
