What does the St. Vincent DePaul Society do with the items donated? Does all of it go to their thrift stores, or does some of it get distributed directly to the poor?

I have a few boxes of clothing and other goods. I have some boxes marked for the SVdP society, and others marked for a homeless shelter supported by the diocese. This shelter put out a plea that they are almost out of clothes.

I would rather my clothing go directly to those in need. I know that the funds raised by the Society help people, but with winter coming, there is an urgent need at the shelter.

Any advice?

in the parishes I am familiar with SV does not run a thrift store but sorts and donates clothing as it becomes available to those in need. however there are a lot of items that can’t be used because badly stained (even filthy), torn, or badly worn. also socks and underwear usually cannot be used due to state health laws. this creates a huge strain on resources, esp. in places like this where they have to pay for trash removal, so do be considerate in sorting items for donation.

also in many areas clothing left outside exposed to the elements, even in plastic bags, cannot be given to people, again due to local laws, so do call and find out when and where donations are accepted.

St. Vincent’s have given me a lot of clothes when I was broke. They have a day shelter here. We can get propane, a shower, laundry done, sandwiches, salads, snacks, coffee, use of a kitchen, clothes and phone messages and much more. It was a huge help when I needed it. GO ahead and give them your clothes. They will go where they are needed. But don’t dump them off. That doesn’t work anymore. You’ve got to bring them to the donation door when it’s open.
Thank you!👍
