Answer me this, Chesterton: do you agree with the Catholic Bishop’s commentary on Matthew 18? A simple yes or no will suffice.
Now that you have gone past the sola scriptura code by drawing off other texts to prove some obscure point, I’ll take this opportunity to bring some others sources to the table as well. We can not accept the bible alone and not look at every available piece of written literature which supports or denies biblicle teaching. The Early Church Fathers were instructed by the Apostles. Paul and John both make it quite clear that everything wouldn’t be written down. Well in this case it was written down and your denying what was written by trying to stick a round Catholic peg into a square Protestant whole. Here are some very early writting in which they make it abondantly clear what the implications of the Matt. scripture at hand means. We can’t put our fingers in our ears and say “the bible alone” if there is clear evidence outside the bible which gives us an understanding of what exactly the apostles were teaching the first Christians. They didn’t write an infallible book and teach infallibly. Look at the byproduct of they’re teaching:

Pope Clement I (WHO WAS TAUGHT BY ST. PETER, THE APOSTLE ST. PETER!!!)
"Owing to the sudden and repeated calamities and misfortunes which have befallen us, we must acknowledge that we have been somewhat tardy in turning our attention to the matters in dispute among you, beloved; and especially that abominable and unholy sedition, alien and foreign to the elect of God, which a few rash and self-willed persons have inflamed to such madness that your venerable and illustrious name, worthy to be loved by all men, has been greatly defamed. . . . Accept our counsel and you will have nothing to regret. . . . If anyone disobey the things which have been said by him [God] through us *, let them know that they will involve themselves in transgression and in no small danger. . . [A.D. 80]).

Hermas
“Therefore shall you [Hermas] write two little books and send one to Clement [Bishop of Rome] and one to Grapte. Clement shall then send it to the cities abroad, because that is his duty” (The Shepherd 2:4:3 [A.D. 80]).

Ignatius of Antioch (IGNATIUS WAS TAUGHT BY JOHN *THE APOSTLE JOHN!!!)
“Ignatius . . . to the church also which holds the presidency, in the location of the country of the Romans, worthy of God, worthy of honor, worthy of blessing, worthy of praise, worthy of success, worthy of sanctification, and, because you hold the presidency in love, named after Christ and named after the Father” (Letter to the Romans 1:1 [A.D. 110]).
“You [the church at Rome] have envied no one, but others you have taught. I desire only that what you have enjoined in your instructions may remain in force” (ibid., 3:1).

Dionysius of Corinth
“For from the beginning it has been your custom to do good to all the brethren in various ways and to send contributions to all the churches in every city. . . . This custom your blessed Bishop Soter has not only preserved, but is augmenting, by furnishing an abundance of supplies to the saints and by urging with consoling words, as a loving father his children, the brethren who are journeying” (Letter to Pope Soter in Eusebius, Church History 4:23:9 [A.D. 170]).
"Today we have observed the Lord’s holy day, in which we have read your letter [Pope Soter]. Whenever we do read it [in church], we shall be able to profit thereby, as also we do when we read the earlier letter written to us by Clement*

I’m not in a tradition of Sola Scriptura, nor do I subscribe to it. So nice try, Rob, but you’re way off. My tradition values reason and tradition too. Which is exactly why I have said what I’ve said - don’t ascribe something to a scriptural text that doesn’t fit biblical interpretation OR tradition.

I have no argument whatsoever that the context of Matthew 16 is about the Church/Body of Christ. But that is not the context of Chapter 18, as it is clearly dealing with how to handle local disputes.

Context is everything in biblical study and interpretation, or it becomes eisegesis instead of exegesis. Quite frankly, this has resembled Protestant prooftexting.

Surely you don’t want to be guilty of that.

I’m not familiar with it.

Which bishops? American?
I quoted the commentary at length and gave the source (the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops). That’s what my follow up posts have all been about, which I thought you were debating against.

Do you even read the posts that you debate? In this case, post #63? 🤷

That’s not Catholic Dogma, not that I necessarily disagree with their point.

I can’t? I have throughout this thread! In fact, I posted direct responses to the OP. 🤷

I consider it a diversion.

Jesus spoke of one church and the apostles didn’t need to ask “Which Church?”

In order for this passage to have any meaning, there must be an identifiable Church to appeal to.

I believe this makes an explicit case for a single, hiearchical Church.

Comments?

Matthew 18

17If he refuses to listen to them, tell it to the church; and if he refuses to listen even to the church, treat him as you would a pagan or a tax collector. First i would go to the person and talk it out if that didnt work i would take 3 friends and talk to him and if that didnt work i would go their pastor and leave it to him. I will say i have never had this problem with my fellow Christians. We are always able to work it out with the Lords help. Deb

That sounds fine, but that’s not the point I was making.

I believe Jesus is indicating that there should be a single Church.

I believe that there was just one Church in early Christianity, and that this Church still exists.

Friend, The true church is ALL believers of Christ. You are a part of my church and i love you as such. I do not believe denominations are pleasing to God because they divide us. I follow Christ. He is the head of my church .God bless Deb

Which church do you belong to?

How does your church determine what is the true will of God?

But that is not what the Bible teaches. Jesus founded a visible Church and it really takes a twisting of the versus to deny that or to make it “All believers” Although I would agree with you that all who are baptized are part of the Church Jesus established.
18
And so I say to you, you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church, 13 and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it.
19
I will give you the keys to the kingdom of heaven. 14 Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven."

I belong to a non denomanational church who believes that the church consists of all believers and we get our beliefs and doctrines from the bible. We are one with all churches whom claim Christ as the son of God born of a virgin (Mary) who believe the bible is the word of God and that Christ will return to the earth. We also believe in the Trinity .We believe Christ died on the cross for our sins and rose from the dead on the third day and all who believe in him will have eternal life. Deb

The rock is the confession of faith In Jesus not peter himself. I do not twist scripture. Psalm18:31 For who is God besides you is our ROCK and who is the ROCK besides the God?
God bless Deb

Sorry i wrote it wrong Psalm 18 : 31 for who is God besides the Lord? who is the Rock except our God? Deb

Many Churches claim to get their beliefs from the bible but they have different beliefs.

Do you believe a person must be baptized in water to go to heaven?

Do you believe that a person once saved is always saved?

Do you believe that God requires us to cooperate with his good grace and obey the commands of Jesus?

These are crucial questions about which not all bible believers agree.

Do you see how your position could lead to confusion and danger?

Why did Jesus change Simon’s name to Rock?

Why did Jesus give Simon the keys to the Kingdom?

To Western, you need a good infusion of Jew to understand what the scripture really intends. I would recommend a book call The Faith of Our Fathers by Cardinal Gibbons. He’ll walk you through what exactly the Jewish boys were thinking when they wrote and taught and spoke. When you remove the bible from its Jewish roots (the Catholic Church) it takes on a whole new meaning with an American/Western mind set. Jesus took these poor guys 2 days journey to this rock in Cesearia Phillipi. Its an enormous rock that he reestablishes the succession promised in Issiah 22 of succession. Explain then why no one in the history of the known world prior to Simon was ever named Cepha/Pierre/Petra/Peter. Look throughout the scriptures and see what unbelievable signifance there was in the changing of someones name. Abram , Father, became Abraham, father of nations. Jacob became Isreal, meaning Seed. From his Seed came all 12 tribes of Isreal. You can’t, with a straight face say that He is talking about his Faith when He just changed his name from Simon to Rock for Pete’s sake. Ha Ha
Study a little Aramaic and understand that Jesus does not say “and you are Peter and upon this rock I shall build my Church.” What He says is “and you are Cepha (Rock) and upon this Cepha (Rock) I shall build My Church.” There is a huge difference when you look at it with the way Christ really said it. This is why it is very dangerous to assume you can go it ‘Bible Alone’. No you can’t. You need 2000 years of experience in translating, studying, and handing down the Bible to really grasp what it says as well as a firm grounding in the Jewish ‘Tradition’. I find it similar to a parent writting an autobiography and there rebelous teenager trying to tell them that what they wrote about themselves is not true. Its our book! We wrote it, recopied it as the papyrus disintergrated for 1500 years, translated into most of the languages of the known world, many of which were before Martin Luther was a twinkle in his Mom and Dad’s eye. I know its difficult for me, because I have this human condition called the ego which keeps me from admitting when I’m wrong, but do you really think that now, you Alone, with your bible, have a better understanding than the people who wrote the book. I don’t say this with spiritual pride or any malice, but Saul really believed the Christian were wrong, is it possible that you might be wrong, Alone, with your bible.
Your Brother in Christ
