In 1862 Saint John Bosco warned about “persecutions that are in store for the Church.” This had been revealed to him in a dream (read the dream), which he told to four hundred boys. In the dream there was a great ship steered by the pope heading for pillars of the Eucharist and Mary amid storms and hostile enemy ships. John told of these ships ramming the great ship of the Church and of a Pope who falls during the battle. The dream caused “no end of wonderment” for the boys and for Catholics at the time but what’s that got to do with us the 21st century? This is the same question Jesus posed to Mary at the wedding feast at Cana when the wine ran out (Jn 2:4). Rather than dismissing Mary’s plea, Jesus gave instructions, which the stewards carried out and the result was Jesus’ first public miracle. Through a dream Saint John Bosco offers us in the new millennium a set of instructions, which if carried out promise peace. What are the instructions? Anchor yourself to the Eucharist and Mary for safe harbor.

Three ways to anchor to the Eucharist and Mary:
  1. Receive Holy Communion with a clean conscience
  2. Visit the Blessed Sacrament in adoration
  3. Pray the Rosary
How do you anchor to the Eucharist and Mary?

OK. I’ll bite. As a vowed member of the Confraternity of Penitents, I have dedicated my entire life to praying for priests. No priests: no Eucharist. I pray the Rosary daily (almost) and frequently spend time in prayer before the Blessed Sacrament.

As a member-in-formation of the Confraternity of Penitents, I go to confession monthly, mass weekly, and eucherist adoration on Saturday (my day off).

For Mary it can be, among many things, the daily rosary (I am an Auxilliary in The Legion Of Mary), reciting the Little Office, abstaining 4 days a week, and fasting daily according to the guidelines of the church.

I do NOT get down on my knees to pray at home, nor would I brag about it if I did. I have a kneeler, yes. I use it when I can,. But more often Fluffy wants to be in my lap as I pray and read, and I assume Mother Mary is happier with the cat’s purr’s in place of my kneeling

It is surprising that no one mentioned Mary’s blue army and Fatima. The first five Saturdays devotion is a great mix of Rosary, Mass and Confession.

Fr. Andrew Apostoli gave a talk at the Catholic Family Conference in California a few years ago on this very topic of the Blue Army. I had already written my book then which includes a segment on the Five Saturdays devotion but at the time I heard the talk it was reassuring to hear Fr. Apostoli connect John Bosco’s dream with Fatima in a similar way.
