Canon 522 provides for the stability of the office of pastor, stating that the appointment is for an indefinite period of time, but giving bishop’s conference the ability to modify it. The US Bishops have modified it to allow for a 6-year term, extendable by another 6-year term, but not precluding indefinite appointment.

Here’s an interesting article, which explores the possible pitfalls of the US system, and explainst he reasons for the indefinite provision in canon law.

The bottom line is that is up to each bishop. The parish I attended thirty years ago still has the same pastor, now in his 34th year there as pastor.

Until 3 years ago our parish was served by religious priests. The first Pastor was here from 1958 to 1975. After that Pastors were here anywhere from 1 to 5 years. We now have our first diocesan priest. At his first Mass with us he said that he consented to coming to our parish with the understanding that he would not have to ever move again. He told us he was only leaving this parish in a box. He’s now in his early 70s and as long as he remains healthy, I guess he’ll remain our Pastor.
