Yeah right, and the burning of churches and the murder of Russian clergy had nothing to do with Soviet atheism. Oh, I forgot, these were just political enemes of opportunity, and had to be extinguished purely for political reasons … Silly excuses and silly naivete.
If you would study history, you would know that Stalin was an equal opportunity monster. He killed or had killed everyone whom he did not like - most vigorously his own fellow communists whom he cosidered a threat to his rule. It had nothing to do with his atheism and everything to do with his paranoia. While the atrocities committed by the Inquisition were a direct corollary of their conviction that they did God’s work to weed out heresies.

And I do not make the mistake of confusing the acts of the Inquisition with the contemprory actions of catholics. I don’t think that any catholic today would commit such atrocities (well, I know that a few would, since they boasted about it). But the fact remains: those atrocities were committed by devout catholics, according to their best interpretation of the creed. Fortunately the interpretation changed in a last few centuries since the theocracy of the middle ages went out of fashion.

You, on the other hand, try to blame the “lack of belief of some god” for the actions of a handful psychopaths… yeah, just like a “scientist” would do… get real buddy.

So what?

Metaphysical naturalism can lead to the inference of nihilism or the rejection of moral-realism, and a system of oppression can develop as an ideological consequence of people believing that metaphysical naturalism is true. If somebody thinks that there is nothing truly wrong with any action, than obviously that can lead quite literally to an indifference towards peoples suffering since any notion that you should not, or ought not to, or that one should make sacrifices, or should have tolerance or virtue, or should feel guilty or empathy towards your fellow human being, is an emotional delusion. There is no rational reason beyond the point of absolute naturalism to view any being as valuable accept in terms of utility.
Precisely. That is how atrocious regimes started. They were in fact very ‘rational’ about the business of mass killing.

More excuses and evasions (with a little ad hominem attached too – nice! ;))

So much for atheism as a shining beacon of ‘rationality’.

Read the link that I gave to the Dawkins review by a fellow atheist.

And talking about “actions directly related to their beliefs”:

See post # 61 above.

The idea that somehow atheist ‘rationality’ inevitably will lead to a utopian humanist rational morality that will be beneficial for mankind is an epitome of simplistic and utterly naive atheist thinking – and hopelessly irrational at that.

Currently: finding a job, working out, building a relationship with the Almighty, and surrendering any lasting doubts I have about myself or my destiny.

🙂

O c’mon, this shows right there that your atheism is reactionary and biased as MindOverMatter says. You think that atheists are more rational? Don’t tell me the old reactionary story that atheism had nothing to do with the mass murders of Stalin, and that it all came down to the ‘religion’’ of communism. And to turn to most recent times: Let’s take Mister ‘uber-rational’ Richard Dawkins. His claims that religious upbringing is child abuse are reactionary and dangerous. I would not want to live in a state where Dawkins was the president (or even worse, dictator). You would have massive religious persecution in the name of ‘rationality’ and ‘enlightenment’, in the name of ‘tolerance’ and ‘freedom’.

And no, Catholics don’t fly airplanes into buildings.
Enjoyed your comment:

With absolute and exhilarating freedom - from any obligations and responsibilities whatsoever… except those that are self-conferred. 👍
Let’s not forget that in electing to follow the teachings of the Catholic church (assuming you have not, in fact, been held down, coerced, brainwashed or otherwise prevented from making a free and informed choice in the matter) you are conferring these obligations upon yourself, as much as anyone who rejects theistic belief is doing so. You are the one making the commitment to conform to a certain standard. No-one else is making this commitment for you, and at the end of the day, it is your actions that will determine whether you have kept to your faith. This is how it works for all of us.

I entirely agree with you. The very fact that we make such free and informed choices is evidence that we exist in order to do so - rather than exist for no reason.

It remains true that you have exempted yourself from any obligations and responsibilities except those you have conferred on yourself without recognising any higher authority. This gives an absolute and exhilarating **sense **of freedom but it also entails - less obviously - slavery to one’s own desires!

Sadness; sick, life altering games of evil morally deprived people; slander; loss of almost every type; more loss, more desperate fearful moments than I can count; suffering of family; suffering of pets; bizarre happenings in the home on a regular basis; intermixed by wonderful moments of closeness to our Lord that words can’t explain. . . and a devoloping understanding of how wonderful His angels are here with us.

Basically, life too unreal for a soap opera to even write which leaves me hanging between a little understanding and complete confusion to sometimes ashamedly wanting to take things in my own hands…

May each of you that God has blessed with peace and joy cherish and savor every minute of it.
