Just wondering what other people have done this year and in the past that helps keep Jesus as a center point in Lent.

We are doing a night a week of no tv and no lights. Gives us a whole evening to praise Jesus and focus on reading scripture. So far so good for my wife and I.

I gave up Facebook (although that hasn’t been going well)…

and I inserted 15 minutes of exercise a day. 15 minutes of language study a day. 15 minutes of music study a day.

I tried to touch on all of me. Body. Mind. Soul… (music speaks to my soul btw).

Unfortunately I have been having SUCH a hard time keeping everything in order… I do language study every day but not quite 15 minutes… have gotten the exercise in but it’s the music study that always seems to not get done. sigh Thinking I took on too much with my schedule.

I gave up facebook, and wine…all for the greater good…i’ve also started going through a Lent activities book with the kids, and I’ve been doing my best to remember to read 5 minutes with the Word booklet…I love Lent. It truly is a beautiful time…even though giving stuff up is hard, hard, hard.

I gave up several internet obsessions I had…Facebook and some other forums I liked to frequent.

I also quit eating fast food…all of which has gone well.

I’m still new to the faith and have been trying to focus on my prayers. I started praying the rosary and tried to commit to a morning and night prayer every day. It’s been somewhat successful but I forget sometimes…😊

My Fiance and I also tried to add on an extra day of mass a week…whether it be stations of the cross, the Latin Mass or just morning adoration. He’s better at it then I am. I never miss Sunday mass…but it is tough getting to the second day…it’s been sporadic, usually an every other week thing.

The hardest thing for me was observing no meat fridays. I’m nine months pregnant and I do need my protein and I know I shouldn’t be too obligated to observe no meat on fridays. I was trying though.

Lots of ways to get protein! Beans are great…not always that friendly to pregnant ladies:p

Wouldn’t normally talk about such things, might scatter or lose the graces given. Anyway, I’m attending extra daily Masses, and praying more for others. I usually stick with things when Lent is over. Hope to do likewise on this occasion.

I am just asking for folks to share what has been successful, unsuccessful during current Lenten Season and prior Lents. If it is shared in a faith building way, would God take away Grace that he is given me for being penitential?

I think it’s good to share these things. You never know, someone might need ideas and may find inspiration in others Lenten sacrifices. 🙂

LOL, not always friendly, but beans have been found to be beneficial to fetal development. Personally I’ve found that after eating them a few times, my body gets used to it and it’s not nearly as unpleasant an experience.

I remember once in college I tried to make it a point to say a Rosary every day. It was quite hard at the time!

More recently, I’ve made it a point to go to the Stations of the Cross every Friday, as well as go to confession more frequently. (My church offers confession during the Stations of the Cross, so it’s quite convenient.) This year my family has also decided to get more active in the 40 Days for Life campaign–this is the first year that my city has something going on for it, so I’m very excited to help out!

This year I’m pregnant again, so I didn’t give up any specific food or anything like that. For some reason, giving up meat on Fridays has been more difficult this year than any other. I’m not sure why, but on Fridays it seems like I see meat EVERYWHERE. But I’ve made it my fish and/or vegetarian day and so far I’ve been able to eat well and avoid meat on Fridays.

haha! My body would probably go into meltdown for the first few days…then figure itself out. No, you guys are right…I’ve just never incorporated beans…I know the Fiance would protest to that one…I’ll have to start looking for some recipes.

Usually I just forget! I’ll have a chicken salad sandwich and not even think about it until after I enjoyed the sandwich!

Fridays are pasta days for dinner!

From experience: chew well and drink lots of water after the meal rather than with it. I even throw a can of beans in the blender with some spices and it makes a nice spread for sandwiches or crackers…plus it helps with making sure they’re chewed up enough.

No Facebook ( tho tonite I had to post a pic from my phone just so I could print it–a picture of one of our specially - ables students. Her mom wanted a copy.)

No wine

No car radio

Pray-as-you-go.org every day

Prayer before the crucifix every nite with the kids evening prayer

Increase donations.

Life is co operating. It’s providing daily opportunities to practice patience and humility. It sure feels like Lent.

Yes, I realize of course you’re just asking, and I understand why you would ask such an interesting question of fellow Catholics, that’s exactly why I replied.

I suppose I’m a little bit strange though in the sense that I don’t like revealing these things, at least not until they are well and truly accomplished. Someone once said **“Your ****spirituality should be somewhat like an iceberg, more hidden below than **shown above” There’s no doubt about it, if you talk too much about your spiritual endeavours you will weaken your resolve. Some things are best kept between oneself and God.

I never liked having my photograph taken either (just another little quirk of mine) but I had one done for my profile. And I really don’t mind sharing ideas with people here; we can all learn from each other.

Thanks for that. It makes sense.

I have taken up saying the Rosary daily, but to be honest, it hasn’t gone so well. I have found it a chore more than anything else. To supplement it, I’ve been making sure to read the daily Mass readings and also do a meditation on them.

Last year I committed to daily Mass and it was the best Lent ever. I was hoping for a similar experience with the Rosary, but it hasn’t happened. Then I realized that not much can probably compete with daily Communion.

I’ve given up my video games, though I do choose to relax that obligation on Sundays. It’s hard, but so far I’ve made it. I find other things to do with my evenings on the rest of the days.

I’ve given up putting salt on my food(I salt everything). As a family we’re going to mass one extra day per week and make a point of taking time for family prayer. My youngest(she’s nine and a future nun…if you tell her otherwise you’re in for a fight:) gave up her bed and chocolate.

Wow…your nine year old gave up her bed? I find that pretty impressive. Future nun, indeed! 🙂

I’m an avid knitter. Instead of giving up knitting I dropped all of my current projects to make nothing but hats for the homeless.

In an interesting twist, my challenge is now to dedicate time to making said hats. Giving up knitting isn’t so hard when the projects are not as enjoyable. I’m not really a hat person…

I wanted to complete at least one hat each week. But then I decided I’d finally pick up Skyward Sword… And…umm…well I’ve almost beaten the game but I only have 2 finished hats so far. 😊

Giving up french fries has been going much better. That was a big “pregnancy food” for me (but only the BK ones) and I never stopped after I had the baby.
