What edition of the Liturgy of the Hours do you use?

I’ve posted quite a few on the Divine Office. I really love the Prayer of the Church and my day just doesn’t feel right if I don’t pray at least part of it.

Anyway, what’s the edition of the LOTH you use and why (features, typeface, etc)?

I’m currently using the Daughters of St. Paul edition of Christian Prayer, primarily because it’s readily available here.

I’m making the poll multiple-choice in case there are those who use more than one edition.

I said 4-volume US breviary, but only because I’m pretty sure that’s where the www.liturgyhours.org website compiles their daily booklets. I use them for two reasons - cost, access.

God Bless,

Robert.

I’ve been using the 4 volume set of The Liturgy Of The Hours for 3 years. I like how indepth it is and really enjoy reading the Office Of Readings.

:blessyou:

I use the CBP Christian Prayer. I was introduced to the Divine Office by faculty who used the 4-volume CBP set.

I also use a volume of Proper Offices of Franciscan Saints and Blesseds in the Liturgy of the Hours (For use with the One-Volume Edition of “CHRISTIAN PRAYER”), also printed by CBP (my copy included a neat cover that piggy-backs it onto that volume. 🙂 )

And, I am more than likely to use Lauds and Vespers in conjunction with the above (or instead of, if there is nothing proper to the day, but mostly I can use it for the Psalter and Ordinary).

(And because people like it when I post these links, if you don’t have a 2005 guide for your CBP book(s) yet, you can get it wee-by-week for Christian Prayer or for the four volume set at these URLs)

I originally wanted to purchase the 4 volume set but it was too expensive at the time. When i pray the Divine Office with Secular Franciscans we use the CBP Cathlic Prayers edition. I love it.

Thanks! You can count me in as one who appreciates the links! 🙂
I use the 4-volume CBP set and received the 2004 guide with my set but haven’t yet ordered the 2005 guide. (I am one of the world’s worst procrastinators!) Now you have saved me the trouble. 🙂 I didn’t even know the guide was available online.

As for the original question, I started out with the Daughters of St. Paul “Christian Prayer” but found it too confusing and too difficult to use with too much page-turning. I also really enjoy the Office of Readings and I could only get the complete Readings with the 4-volume set. And yes, I know they are available online but I prefer reading them in the book rather than on a computer screen. Seems more devotional and prayerful to me.

It was a big investment but the set has been worth every penny to me and I strongly recommend buying them to anyone who loves to pray the Divine Liturgy.

Oblates use Shorter Christian Prayer in our meetings, and we use it in the parish. Personally I use the 4 volume set because I say the office of readings at night when I can’t sleep as vigils. with that and lectionary I get complete instruction in the faith. books were a gift from my brother when he went to the Latin version. One volume Christian Prayer is too hard to use and unwieldy, and why did they reprint the canticles each day instead of putting them inside the covers? A have both a multi-volume UK version and a one volume UK version, which I used to use. the psalm translation is so much better, I hope it is adapted if and when we get a universal English language translation. If any body would like to purchase at reasonable cost and shipping, PM me.

I use the 4 vol set for personal use, but I have a copy of Christian Prayer (CBP) for when our family prays the LOTH together (we typically do Evening Prayer). I also have the CBP edition of the Little Office of the BVM which I occasionally use, esp. on days in Ordinary Time without memorials or feasts (ferias).

One small side note. The CBP edition does not have the Te Deum. I don’t understand why this is not included. how could they overlook that?

Hmmm… Perhaps because they don’t really expect someone who uses “Christian Prayer” to pray the Office of Readings?

Just a guess. 🙂

What is the office of the dead for?
If I’m not mistaken, it’s a votive office that can be prayed for anyone who has died. Does anyone know if I am right?

I know for sure that it is prayed on All Souls Day.

Right now I use the Little Office of the BVM. I hope to get the four volume Liturgy of the Hours when I can afford it. There are websites that have the prayers on them, but I do not own my own computer at this time and would not have access enough to say all the prayers. If I printed out enough of them at the library (at $0.15 a page) I may as well get my own copies of the books. I found the little office in the “Free Literature” area of my local parish.

I figure that will help me start the habit of morning and evening prayer (should say restart since I did have the four volumes of the Liturgy of the Hours before a water heater leaked water all over them, destroying them :crying: ).

Can you guess? 😃 It is recited when somebody in your community (define ‘community’ however you will) dies.

Some societies and individuals pray the Office of the Dead regularly.

I started out with the Christian Prayer Book about 5 years ago. About three years ago, I was blessed by receiving a gift of the Four Volumes… Litury of the Hours Catholic Book Publishing New York 1975. Every one of my days is blessed by the readings. Regretfully, I never take time to read all of it each day but I do read some of it. My favorite parts are the wonderful sermons… favorite writer is St. Ambrose. I am awed by how many sermons apply to today and how many of them seem to be speaking directly to me. Oh, how beautiful is our Catholic Faith!🙂

anyone have any idea when this will be updated to get all the recently cannonized saints included?

all for JESUS!!

I don’t know if there is one more recent than the 1992 Liturgy of the Hours Supplement from CBP.

I don’t think so since that’s the supplement I received with my set when I bought it last year. Unless they’ve updated it in the last six months, that should be the latest version. Have there been other changes to the calendar since 1992?

I agree, some of these writings apply so well to today that I can’t believe they were written so long ago.

You’re right. The Office of the Dead is mandated for All Souls’ Day. However, it is a votive Office that can be prayed when it’s a Ferial (i.e. weekday with no celebration in the Calendar) or any day when an Optional Memorial is permitted.
