My mother passed away a few days ago.Although she was agnostic, she made sure her children(us) received all the catholic sacraments. Nearing her death,I had a priest come and administer her the last rites.During her life I tried to talk to her about God.She always said she was unable to determine God’s existence.
I am a little worried, and want to do all I can for her soul.Need advise, please.

I am very sorry for the loss of your mother. You should give the rectory a call and request a Mass (or several) to be said for the repose of her soul. If you select a specific date, it would be nice to attend it yourself along with any family members or friends. Praying the rosary and Chaplet of Divine Mercy for her would be good also. Abover all, trust in God’s perfect justice; he alone knows us as we truly are. ❤️

May your mother rest in peace. You should ask your priest to say a Mass for her. You can also enroll her in a perpetual Mass–usually they are said at a cathedral or by religious orders . Of course you should always pray for her. Remember her at the part of Mass when we are invited to pray for “our departed beothers and sisters”, include her in your evening prayers, dedicate your rosaries to her salvation. God knows what was in her heart and yours. I will remember her in my prayers tonight also.

Forever grateful for your prayers for my mom and for the good advise. You both have set the task ahead for me to help her as much as I can.Tam

i will keep you and your mother in my prayers…

have a mass said for your mother and say a rosary for her every night.

That’s beautiful that your mother made sure her children received all the Catholic sacraments even though she struggled herself regarding the existence of God. I wouldn’t be surprised if the best thing you could do for her soul is to take advantage of the life she wanted for you and your siblings, the life of a Catholic, a life in pursuit of holiness. In other words, just like saying prayers or offering Masses is good for your mom’s soul, offering your entire life in a sincere pursuit of holiness would even be better.

You might want to do the Gregorian Masses, google it there is plenty of information about them online these days, it basicly means having 30 masses said on 30 consecutive days for the soul of the deceased.

Who do you think has greater faith:

1.) A woman is born a Catholic, recieves all of the sacraments, and dies a Catholic without ever questioning a single teaching or asking herself why she believes it. She never persues a relationship with God, but goes through the motions of being a “good Catholic”.

2.) A woman is born Catholic, and dies a Catholic, despite all her life having doubts about her faith and even the existance of God. She doubts and is skeptical, but does it anyways. More so, she passes this faith onto her children.

What remarkable mental strength, humility, and faith to be able to be in disbelief, and yet know that it is right! If I wasn’t 100% sure, I’m not sure if I would be strong enough to be here. Your mother inspires me. To me she has very strong faith, and my personal opinion is that she is with God or on her way there. Keep praying and have hope!

Thank you VainillaBean, your words gave comfort to me,because they made me see the possibility of her salvation from a different point of view. She in fact gave us the tools that put us her children in the right path. She did what she could within the frame of her doubts. She had not been baptised herself until she was a school age child and requested her parents to arrange to be given the sacrament. She used to tell us that story.🙂
