What ever happened to Protestants?

I have noticed a decline in the number of Protestants doing door-to-door or street evangelization. What is up with that? I guess the whole fundamentalist boom (which Catholic Answers and other organizations were a response to) of the 1980’s and 1990’s is really over.

Very strange, the only people I see going door to door are JWs. I haven’t had a Protestant come to my door in probably 10 years. Back in the 1990’s I was always getting invited to Christian rock concerts and there were “non-denom” “church” youth groups trying to get us to come to their concerts all the time. All that now seems to be in decline.

Does anyone else have this same experience?

(Don’t get me wrong I am glad that Protestants aren’t spreading their errors as much anymore, I just thought it is strange.)

I don’t think that is effective on me. I keep tin foil on my head to stop the aliens from controlling me…

Just to provide at least one serious answer to your question…

I can’t say we ever had a lot of door to door evangelizers around here so no I haven’t really seen a decline per se. We do get the usual JW watchtower left on the door every so often and I did have a nice conversation with a couple of LDS fellows a while back.
If I am ever approached by these folks who invite me to their church I just politely decline and then invite them to ours.

I do not mean to hijack your thread, but I watch an interesting video on LDS today. I living in the south now, and have not had one come knocking, but when I go back north to visit, I can’t wait to talk to them 😃

One thing I can say is that I have never seen a Lutheran go door-to-door. Is that common?
 
In my neighborhood, I haven’t seen LDS or JWs for years, however, every year before Easter and before Christmas the Baptists come door-to-door. They hand out high-dollar glossies and begin their oral invitation by asking if I already have a church. Having been through the Rite of Acceptance, I feel comfortable saying yes, and naming my local Catholic Church. 👍

I was a Presbyterian for five years and once during that time my congregation was asked to distribute door flyers to up the attendance number for Easter so the collection take would be bigger. (Truly! At least the pastor was honest about the motive…)

I was a Methodist for three years and was never asked to do any outreach for the church.

It seems to me that the best outreach is a good example. I’ve often wondered why someone with a bumper sticker advertising their church would pass unsafely or wildly exceed the speed limit. I’m sure I’m not alone in that regard.
 
My former Baptist church (moved after my new Catholic wife found a job across the State) continues what they have always done, going door-to-door for Easter and Christmas services and “The Lamb” Easter presentation.

Amen to that! I really shake my head when I see an erratic or worse…aggressive…driver that has fish emblems or the Virgin Mary on the back window.
 
I don’t think I’ve ever seen a Protestant go door-to-door. I only get LDS, JW and now-and-then Hare Krishna door-to-door folks. I’ve lived a lot of places, too.
One church does hand out invitations to Thanksgiving and Easter dinners but they hand them out in parking lots, not at people’s doors.

Can you NAME me someone who has never heard of Jesus Christ?

I think almost everyone knows who He is.

The only challenge now is to see who follows Holy Scripture - Bible or who follows humans.

Now…Nobody can appear before God and say he/she has never heard of Jesus. And certainly nobody who knows Jesus can say they did not have a chance to know Him personally.

When I read the Title of this topic…I thought you were talking about the term “Protestants”. I rarely ever hear anyone say they are protestant anymore. Sometimes I feel like people get offended if you use the term protestant instead of Christian. Lately I have tried not to use that term, because I do not want to be offensive.

meh… I would have to disagree, they are Christians preaching Jesus (the same Jesus unlike JWs). I wouldn’t mind them evangelising as long as they don’t try and convert Catholics,they always try to btw. Don’t get me wrong I believe the Catholic faith is the fullness of Christianity, although it would be wonderful seeing someone like an athiest or a muslim come closer to Christian truth, by being baptised as a Protestant. You never know, many of these people could find their way into the Church.

When I still lived with my parents, the only ones that came to our door were nice, young LDS men in white shirts and black pants. My mom always let them in and had a converstation with them. I studied Mormonism for over a year and had one conversation but was amazed by how little these two men knew about Mormonism, nonetheless, we had a respectful and constructive conversation.

Since I’ve been on my own, I’ve never been visited.

The “evangelism” stressed in the Protestant church where I grew up and in the Lutheran church were I’m now a member, the approach is to reach out to those we know, with the Great Commandment and also with loving conservations that speak of Christ. That’s what I do. But I tend to do this with those who aren’t Christians, when I’m with Catholics or Protestants, I rejoice in faith with them.

I think the “cold evangelism” - expressions of faith with those unknown to us - tends to happen via mass media (internet, radio, television, etc.).

When I was in my early teens my family attended the Church of the Nazarene. We would “canvas” the neighborhoods inviting people to church. As a young teen I even joined the “evangelistic team” in my local church to learn “how to win people to Christ”…typically this “training” taught us to be conversant using the tracts “The Roman Road” or “The 4 Spiritual Laws” in “sharing the gospel.”

Once I was convinced a Friend a different way of “evangelizing” was shown to me…reflected profoundly in the words of Francis of Assisi…“Preach the gospel at all times…and when necessary use words.”

People would rather “see a sermon” lived out before their eyes than “hear a sermon” which for the most part falls on deaf ears.
