Too many times I come across the “God is Love and Mercy so I don’t think He would send anyone to Hell just because they commit just one mortal sin” way of thinking.

This video clip reminds us that 90% of the teaching about Hell came from Jesus.

Many approved seers were given visions of Hell. They described demons as human/animal of indescribable grossness.

Those souls damned to Hell float uncontrollably above the pit and are harassed without rest.

But we know that God does NOT intend for us to be condemned to Hell…in the final analysis it is an individual CHOICE.

Even in the Apocalyptic Final Judgment those on His left utter arrogance to Him. So deep is the corruption of some souls.

St. John referred to Satan as " the one who has NO love."

I on the other hand tell my students that there are only two things they need to know about hell:
  1. It exists.
  2. You really don’t want to go there.

Indeed. The Church needs to shift her evangelistic priorities. Less Christ, more Hell. The Good News really ought not be about God’s limitless love. That love is only a means to our own good end. The true nature of the Church is that it provides a means to save one’s own hide.

We must not allow the truth of Divine Mercy to preempt our thoughts of Hell. Our behaviors in life and our attitudes (sinful/uncharitable/lustful, etc.) can be our “greased skids” to falling into hell.

Divine mercy is boundless but it still predicated on how we keep the commandments of both: the Ten and the Church.

Otherwise would be apathy…a sin in and of itself.
 
What would be the disqualifing conditions for not getting into Heaven?
 
DH just finished reading Paul Thigpen’s “My Visit To Hell”. He said everyone should read that book!

I am not sure the wording on item number two is quite strong enough-- other than that, I think this sums it up pretty well.

Complete rejection of G_D, of His Love, and His Mercy. This applies to both the Christian and the people who are under the bonds of Natural Law, since Natural Law implies an awareness of consequences that exist beyond the death of the physical body.

The rejection can be active (as in the evangelical atheists who work to evangelize their belief that there is no G_D, or in people who have been given the gift of faith in Christ Jesus yet have rejected that belief), or it can be passive (the Christmas/Easter Christians, who are “neither hot nor cold” and so G_D will spew them forth from His mouth).
 
I was listening to the CD ‘Confession’ by Fr Larry Richards, free from the Mary Foundation www.catholicity.com

He makes the point hat every time we are faced with temptation we are faced with a choice between Jesus, and doing what we want to do. We look at Jesus on the Cross, see how much He loved us, enough to suffer and die for us, then we say “Sorry, Jesus, but I want to … fornicate, commit adultery, steal, lie, etc.” Then we spit in His face and walk away.

It was after reading this that I bought Paul Thigpen’s book. Now my husband is reading it, he almost NEVER reads anything religious/spiritual.

Jesus mentioned Hell something like 13 times in the Gospels. We were taught about it pre-Vatican II, then it became fuzzy. God was taught to be a loving God and Hell was seldom mentioned.

There needs to be a balance IMO. St Faustina reminded us that if we do not throw ourselves on God’s Mercy, we will face His Justice. And His Justice will be terrible indeed for the unrepentant sinner.

That is why those of us who love Him, must pray without ceasing for our family and friends who are living in a state of sin.
 
I’d like to know what heaven is like. According to one EWTN priest, you will not see your family members from your earthly life. If I can’t be assured that I can see my beloved grandmother (I know she is there), then I really don’t care either way.

Leah, I have never heard anyone else say you can’t see your relatives in heaven that are there.

Catholic philospher Dr. Peter Kreeft has a wonderful talk on heaven, and you can listen to it online here.

One of the things he said is for us to try to imagine heaven would be like a baby in the womb trying to imagine the world outside. “Maybe it’s an even bigger womb!”

Your last sentence disturbs me - if you couldn’t see your grandmother in heaven, it’d be okay for you to be in hell? You really need to think about what you’re saying there. If heaven is incomprehensibly wonderful, then hell must be incomprehensibly horrible.

According to the Catholic teaching Hell is real and we as journerers we should try to avoid it as much as possible not because some people have gone there but because it not our ultmate destiny as Christians.
Lets use the Lenten season to raise our place in Heaven or shorten our stay in purgatory.Repent and be faithful to the Gospel.
