Many of the Eastern churches benefited from multiple visits by Saint Paul in the first century. By contrast, the western church was visited only once, though for two years while Paul was under house arrest towards the end of his ministry. The Eastern churches encompasses numerous highly educated first century cultures, while we in the west have a faith based on the culture of Rome that radiated outwards. This gives rise to a great diversity of very ancient and beautiful faith traditions. 🙂

Дуже дякую, Пане Докторе! І Вам також!

I do not see how your statement differs from what I said.
I believe we were saying the same thing differently;) I was just in a discussion with a good friend of mine, a Roman Catholic, and he was quite confused when I mentioned the 23 Particular Churches that make up the Whole Catholic Church. When I mentioned how some of the Eastern Catholic Churches heads are Patriarchs, he took that to mean they weren’t “under the Pope” (his phrase not mine). I was just trying to point out that while the Melkite Church, for example, being a Particular Church, has as it’s head their Patriarch, they are in Communion with Rome and “accept” the universal authority of the Pope.

So, now when I talk to someone who has no idea of Eastern Catholic Churches, I stress that they are all Catholic-in Communion with the Pope, they are members of the “One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic” Church, but they are Particular Churches, usually with a Patriarch.
I also explain that the Pope has a unique office-he is Head of the Latin Church, but in addition, he has universal authority which the other church heads (Patriarchs) don’t have.
So, I hope you see that I was just trying to clarify. Your original post was spot-on:)**

Wow, very confusing stuff! Thanks for the explanation everyone.🙂
That’s how I felt when I first “discovered” the Eastern Catholic Churches. My eyes were really opened about how truly Universal, yet diverse the Catholic Church! I encourage you to post any further questions you have. All of the regulars in this forum are much more informed than I am, and there are lots of books, websites, etc. that are out there on this subject. (As an aside, I just dropped another $80 getting six more books on the Eastern Churches).

I can understand how you must feel. When I tell other people that there are other Catholic churches they look at me like I’ve said something in an unintelligible language or as if I need to be locked up in the asylum.

Exactly my friend-I was “cautioned” for what I said before my friend understood!
