I’ve been a Catholic all my life. I have always heard that object x is blessed, that you should get rosaries blessed, etc. But what exactly is a blessing? Does it mean that God will give graces through the blessed object? Is the blessing of an object different than the blessing at the end of mass, or adoration (other than the fact that the benediction in adoration is from Our Lord Himself)?

It means that a priest has prayed for the salvation of the souls of anyone who makes use of the object. It also sets the object apart from ordinary objects, and you can’t sell it or throw it away. When you’re done with a blessed object you can give it away, bury it, or burn it.

And is the blessing at Mass also a way that the priest prays for the souls of the people he blesses? And that Jesus prays for the souls of the people who recieve benediction? Also, is this in the Catechism or some other authoritative book? Also… Thanks!😃

Mother Angelica gave the recommendation of putting broken or unwanted blessed objects into new construction for those of us who don’t have a back yard.

There are specific indulgences that may be obtained by using a blessed devotional object (crucifix, cross, rosary, scapular, medal).

There is more than one meaning:
  1. Scriptural:
  • praise, * the desire that good fortune go with a person or thing, * dedication of a person or thing to God’s service and * a gift.
  1. Liturgical:
clerical sanctification of persons or things to divine service, or invoking of divine favor on what he blesses.
