Hi everyone,
I suffer from scrupulosity, and I get very confused as to exactly what constitutes grave matter of a sin. I heard once to use the 10 Commandments as a guide, but I’m not exactly sure what that means, and I often confuse myself. Can someone give me some advice as to what exactly grave matter means?
Thanks
J
Catechism:
1858 Grave matter is specified by the Ten Commandments, corresponding to the answer of Jesus to the rich young man: "Do not kill, Do not commit adultery, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Do not defraud, Honor your father and your mother."132 The gravity of sins is more or less great: murder is graver than theft. One must also take into account who is wronged: violence against parents is in itself graver than violence against a stranger.
All the 10 commandments have things in them that are grave…(and also usually things that are venial too…)
Grave matter are things like:
Euthanasia
Lust
Adultery
Murder
Abortion
Lying under oath in court
Deliberate desire to murder
Missing Sunday or Holy Day of Obligation Mass (without excusing reason or dispensation)
Theft (not stealing a pen…but robbing a bank)
Deliberately desiring grave harm to a someone
Contraception
Blasphemy (directing hatred toward God…etc)
Pornography
Fornication
Burning down someones house
Satanism
Witchcraft/Occult things
Worshiping and Idol or false God
etc etc…
It will be important for you to have a “regular confessor” in dealing with your difficulty.
