Is saying “I’m proud of you.” or “Have some pride.” a sin?

Will you please quit beating yourself up? :hey_bud:

Bud, you seem to consider everything imaginable as either a sin or something sinful… believe it or not there are many actions that ARE NOT SINS!!! :bigyikes:

I think someone already said you were being too scrupulous, and advised you to sit down with a priest and have a little chat about life and how to live it. Try not to question stuff in the light of whether it’s sinful or not, but whether something is simply proper or not. Your God-given conscience (which is an implementation of your intellect and your free will) can usually lead you to the right conclusion.

That having been said, the stuff you mentioned and described is not wrong… having pride in yourself and your surrounding friends and circumstances is only right and proper.

Hi Cool Catholic Guy, I think the ‘Pride’ the Church talks of is if someone is puffed up with pride and thinks they are above others…at least, thats what I think it means…

Not all sorts and levels of pride are sinful.

Just like not all sexual thoughts are sinful (indeed, between husband and wife they are not only not sinful but part of God’s plan for that couple).

And just like not all anger constitutes a sin - for example Christ’s anger at the moneylenders in the Temple.

Certainly it’s permissible to be proud of God and, to a lesser extent, of ourselves and our achievements as long as in the midst of this we remember Him without whom we wouldn’t exist or be able to achieve anything.

And there’s no reason on earth why being proud of another person (one’s son or daughter or spouse or whatnot) would ever constitute sin - the only sort of pride which COULD approach sin relates to self, not to being proud of others.

pride is basically being a liar with yourself, thinking yourself better then you really are, and purposely not giving credit to God in all things,
it is the opposite of humility, which is an honest facing of facts, humility is not thinking “i’m scum, i’m dirt, i’m lower then low”, it is instead just being honest, knowing your complete dependence on God, knowing you are weak and that all your strength comes from God, and knowing that all good things, talents, looks, all come from God, and are not ours to glory in, but instead to be thankful for.
of course feeling good about yourself in what is good about you is not pride, because it is not a lie, you truly are good in the things that you are good in, that is the truth, so it’s ok to feel good in your talents and successes, so long as you acknowledge who gave them to you.

and although pride is generally referring to thinking ourselves better then we really are, it can also be thinking ourselves worse then we really are, so you just have to be careful and know yourself,
but don’t freak out if you are unsure of your sins or if you fall every so often, God is not terribly offended when He knows how much you are trying and struggling to be good, all He wants is that you try and don’t give up, and if you just keep trudging on with trust in God and constant recourse to Him, then He will send you many many graces to succeed.
just do what you can and that is all you can do, don’t worry.

ok, hope this helps, take care.
(if you are wondering why i said all that, it is because of the second reply to you d: )
