What exactly is veneration?

Is asking a Saint for intercession veneration?

Or is veneration a set of actions, rituals, etc?

Is simply acknowledging a Saith a type of veneration?

I have asked this question several places and most people tell me about praying to Saints.

Is that the main form of veneration?

Is the Catholic understanding of veneration general…as in any thought, word or deed that shows deep respect…or does it entail specific things?

I know that veneration of the cross is to kiss the Crucifix.
