What God loves in us?

I think that God can love only what is worth Him, the Absolute Good and Purity. And if we are sinners: our desires, our will, our thoughts are imperfect (and will never be!), then God cannot love them. In another terms: if God is “White”, then our desires, will and thoughts are “gray”, and absolute “White” cannot love “gray”. And so, question arises: what God loves in us? Maybe, in us, in our hearts there exists (or may exist) a pure place, some pure part, which is not subjected to our sins and imperfections, and God loves that part? What do you think about this?

God loves us as we are.

Our thoughts are not us.

This is the very basis of Christian spiritual life. After the fall, we associate our thoughts with who we are.

We have sinful desires, so we are evil.
We sin in thought, word and deed, so we are unpardonable and God hates us.
This is what the devil will have you believe. But that’s not true.

My favorite example is the parable of the rich man. In Mark’s gospel, the gospel writer says, Jesus loved the young man. This young man kept the commandments but was not ready to follow Jesus (yet). Jesus didn’t simply love the nice part about this man and hate the evil part. He loved him fully. It is the young man who didn’t respond to God.

So it is with us. God loves us fully and unconditionally. It is in his love that he wants to avoid sin and embrace virtue. If you don’t do it, he still loves you but it is you who don’t love him.

In the sermon on the mount, Jesus says the Father makes sure the rain falls on both the just and the unjust. That is to say, God loves us fully, as we are. It is not a question of white or grey.

This is simply not true. If that were the case the world wouldn’t exist. God created the world of love and world is by definition not the absolute good. Only God is absolutely good. If he loved only what was good, he’d only love himself.

God Loves us because He created us out of His Love.
I don’t have children, but I presume He gives us a glimpse of that Love through our children. Now multiply that by many billions trillions

God made us in His own image. Even if we don’t act like it…yet, He knows our potential far better than we do. And that potential, as with Himself, involves a truth and beauty and dignity and nobility and holiness and greatness in general that we only see glimpses of in fellow humans now, if we’re able.
