Two more. These are foreign:

Europa Europa (1990) about a Jewish boy trying to survive as a “Hitler Youth” in WWII.

El Norte (1983) A teenage brother and sister cross illegally from Guatemala to the US. One vivid scene, they were crawling through a sewer and were attacked by rats. EEEESSHH! 😬

Johnny mnemonic with Kiano Reeves,we discovered it in the DVDs shop some time back, have to chase it up againDont know how popular it was…

Tampopo, a 1985 Japanese film about a woman who learns to prepare great noodle soup from two truck drivers. Directed by Juzo Itami. The main story line is interspersed with unrelated vignettes that are masterpieces of satire. (For anyone who may be interested seeing the film, note that there is some eroticism in a subplot regarding a gangster and his lover.)

Westward the Women, a 1951 American film about the experiences of a group of women crossing the country to marry men in a settlement in California. Directed by William A. Wellman. The only western I know of whose plot centers around women instead of men.

I’m not much of a movie fan, but I liked both of these enough to buy a copy of each.

The Way Home. Great movie from South Korea. Follows a boy who goes to live with his grandmother in the Korean countryside. The woman who plays the grandmother had never even seen a movie, before acting in this one!

Well yes, that’s certainly true, too! Heee! 😉

I think that it’s probably my favorite film version of this story, actually!

I think that it’s really well done. 🙂
