What happened to Limbo?

The other day a friend of mine was trying to bust the Catholic religon for mistakes in the past. Most of his questions I could answer quite easily but then he asked “what happened to Limbo?”. I have never heard of Limbo in the Catholic church and was wondering what it is? He also said we believed in it and then “the last pope” got rid of it. What should I tell him? Why did we get rid of it? Where did the belief come from? And is the information he fed me even accurate? Thanks!!
