I remember when he was beatified back in 2000, there was alot of negative talk about how his canonization would be a disaster for ecumenical relations, but others believed it was inevitable. To my knowledge however there seem’s to be no plans to canonize him.

Sometimes there can be a long delay between being beatified and being canonized. That doesn’t mean something afoul is up.

True. I think Bl. Pio Nono will get there someday. After all, he did say he was Tradition… 😃

It will be very difficult to canonize Pius IX. He was a very hated figure during the Italian war of unification. Countless italian patriots were executed in the Papal States. It would be like the US declaring George III an historical hero.

Pius IX was not for ecumenical relations but was a true defender of the Church of Christ, the very reason he should be made a saint.

I’ve never heard about Pius IX before. Why is canonizing him so controversial?

That’s a false dichotomy. Does this mean that those Popes who made genuine steps towards a true ecumenism (Bl. John Paul II and Bl. John XXIII come to mind) weren’t true defenders of the Church? 🤷

Bl. Pius IX certainly was a great Pope, but there’s no need to exalt him at the expense of others.

None of this has anything to do with canonization. A canonization is a statement about the person’s life of heroic virtue. How he did his job is not even taken into account in the process. The whole process focuses on virtue.

Pius IX has already been found to have lived a life of heroic virtue. Regardless of what he did not do he remains a model of virtue. The the next thing would be that second miracle. The pope can wave it, as has been done for others or may choose to leave it alone as has been done for others as well.

It’s not a political issue. Please don’t turn it into such. It’s a prudential judgement by the pope.

This is not something that would matter for the actual canonization, but to the outside world it would be controversial due to the skepticism floating around towards how Pope Pius IX behaved in response to Nazism. If the Pope canonized him you would guarantee to have a lot of media and conspiracy claims rippling across the internet.

Of course, this would not be close to the first time that would have happened. Far from everybody liked it when St Thomas More was canonized either due to the political turmoil of his life, but that isn’t going to stop the Pope in his decision.
