I have a strange question. This morning at mass, we did not say the Profession of Faith (say the Creed). I don’t ever recall NOT saying the creed at mass. Is it a special thing for this week of Advent, or am I missing something?

You are not missing something, the priest missed something. I have seen things being missed from time to time just out of confusion.

By any chance, are you mistaking the creed for the gloria? It is true that we do not pray the gloria in advent. If the pastor truly omitted the creed, it was perhaps an oversight. They are human.

Could just be the weather. Our priest skipped the Our Father, got a bunch of blank looks from the congregation, realized his mistake and backed up. Said he was distracted by the snow like a 6yo! 😃

I literally laughed out loud (which for me reading Catholic Answers is rare).

Thats great. LOL. Hey, everyone makes mistakes!

During Advent, the Profession of Faith (nicene creed) is replaced with the Apostles creed and the Gloria is omitted.

We still say the profession of faith in the Lincoln diocese. Only the Gloria is gone.

Some have done a rite of acceptance – even this late. The creed would be omitted.

The nicene and apostles creed are both valid options during any season. (Meaning one or the other. One should be done-- unless there are circumstances like I mentioned).

As others have said, there should have been SOME kind of profession of faith done today. It could have been one of the creeds or there could have been some other rite where some kind of faith statement was made.

Did Mass run unusually long for some reason? That’s not a proper reason but I’ve seen it done. I know that at the Mass I attended today the priest gave a longer than usual homily and after communion a sister spoke asking for donations for senior religious sisters, brothers, and priests. Mass ran long enough that the lights shut off. (The lights are on a timer and it was the last Mass of the day.) But we still said the Apostle’s Creed (which has not always been the case if a long Mass was expected.)

Not true. There is no “replacing,” really, because either one can be used in any Mass that requires the Creed.

It wasn’t about word police. You made it sound as if its mandated to use the apostles creed in advent. That isn’t true.

There are absolute truths in the faith, but alas, the same is not true for language! So, I’ll sleep well tonight…

If you want to know why there was no profession of faith when it was not replaced by a renewal of baptismal promises or some other proper ceremony, please just ask the priest himself. One of the options for the profession of faith is to be used at all Sunday masses. If he left it out because he was distracted for some reason, we are all human and this can happen, he will let you know. If he has decided he wants to leave it out on his own authority, which he doesn’t have, he will know that his parishioners are expecting the mass to be offered according to the proper liturgical books. “Say the black, do the red,” as Father Z says. He will then have to explain himself to you. If he continues to leave out the professional of faith on purpose, and he is a parochial vicar you can take it up with the pastor. If he is the pastor, you could inform the bishop. Out of common politeness and respect for the preisthood, we should not go to a higher authority until we have discussed our concerns with the priest involved.

It could be because my English isn´t as good as it should be, but I don´t understand your post.
I mean, you siad during the mass the Apostolic credo instead of the Nicean one?
Or you didn´t say none of them?
Because if it was the first option I think both Credos are accepted during every season.
if it was the second one it could be because you made some kind of profession of faith, like renewing yor baptizing votes.
