What happened to those who died before Jesus?

I know I should know the answer to this already but here goes.

What happened to the souls who died before Jesus? Can they/have they been saved? It says in the Apostles Creed that Jesus descended into hell. Did he/could he have saved some of the souls who never got to hear his message during on earth?
