Why would a “right” exist to say “vile and hateful stuff” about others? What are the grounds for such a right?
This is akin to dumping hazardous materials into the environment. Why would anyone have a “right” to do so?
Is that where your notion of liberty takes you? The right to do whatever for its own sake? Why would that be a desireable state of things?
You say you stand for the right for others to say what offends you deeply to your core, yet why should others have such a “right.”
What you seem to be confusing is…
- the “right” of others not to be restricted in their free speech merely because you find it offensive.
Which is quite a different matter from…
- granting others the right to be offensive to you just for the sake of causing offense.
The first requires justification on other grounds, grounds which would need to outweigh your right not to be offended. The second merely gives others carte blanche to be offensive.
Why would that be a good thing? It simply detracts from the dignity owed all human beings.
