We were doing very well. People were putting threads in their proper forums. This week, I’ve came across more than 10 threads that don’t belong under Catholic Customs and Catholic Traditions, when there are specific forums for those topics.

What happened? Did you folks forget?

Only post what is about Catholic customs or Catholic tradition on TC Forum. However, if there is a forum for that subject, then use that forum.

Please don’t forget.

Thanks.

In other news: the GOP… oops sorry wrong forum:o

You’re a good man Mr. Casey!👍

But the good news is that we went an entire day without anyone creating a new thread about Immaculate Conception being a holy day this weekend, and which Masses on Saturday count for what, 👍

While it is true that some questions concern the liturgy or spirituality or other topics that have their own forum, perhaps posters are looking for specifically traditional Catholic answers to those questions and so place them here. If this forum is simply for Catholic customs, I suggest a renaming from “Traditional Catholicism” to “Catholic Customs.” The title “Traditional Catholicism,” as I am sure everyone knows, implies much more than just customs.

For example, I recently created a thread that showed pictures of blatant sacrilege at an OF Mass celebrated by an Archbishop in Italy (the celebrants all wore children’s face paint). I placed that thread in this forum because such topics are of interest to traditional Catholics. I notice know that the thread was not locked or moved, but completed deleted. If this forum was titled “Catholic Customs” I would not have placed it here, because it had little to do with customs. However, it had much to do with the interests of traditional Catholics.

So again, if this forum’s purpose is not traditional Catholicism as commonly understood by that term, but Catholic customs, then I suggest a name change. It will make the job of moderation much easier and will not confuse people who come here looking for topics of interest to traditional Catholics.

I’ve said this before, and I’ll say it again, and I hope that I don’t sound disrespectful of the Moderator.

People like to chat with people that they feel comfortable with.

I certainly do. Don’t you?

So what I think happens is that people come to CAF looking for friends to talk things over with, and those who are comfortable with the “traditional” Catholics prefer to come to this section and visit with others about any and all topics.

I realize that this is a different “vision” of CAF than what the Moderator has. The Moderator would like to divide people up according to "subject.

If we make CAF into a large building with many room, what I think the Moderator would do is put a sign on each room with the title of the subjects that can be discussed in that room, and divide the people up according to what they would like to discuss.

But what I think many other people (including myself, to a certain exten) would do with that building full of rooms is ask people to get together in groups that they feel comfortable with, and just talk amonst themselves.

I was evangelical Protestant for the first 47 years of my life, and I have experienced both models. In some churches, Sunday school was divided by “topic,” and people signed up for new “topics” each semester. Very much like a real “school.”

But in other churches, Sunday school was divided up according to “age” and “stage of life.” E.g., the “Young Marrieds,” the "Family Builders (people with children), “the Mid-Age Crisis!”, the “Keenaged Citizens,” etc. (These are actual names of actual Sunday school classes in actual churches, BTW.) Most people stayed with the same “Group” for all of their lives in that church, and the group would discuss many different topics.

Now since this is the Moderator’s Building, then the Moderator makes the call, and the rest of us should respect his/her wishes. 🙂

But I hope this helps the Moderator understand why many people just don’t seem to fall into line with his/her model. 🙂

It’s interesting that this is the only forum that “brands” Catholicism. There is not a forum for “modern” Catholicism" or “black stripes with white polka dot Catholicism”
IMO, respectfully, this is a failed concept, due to the nature of Catholicism itself. Catholicism is unlike literally any other topic that can be imaginged. The subject itself assumes a great degree of unity.

The difficulty with having a branded forum is that it emphasizes qualitative differences in Catholicism that do not (should not?) exist. I don’t think it’s a good idea to encourage people to set themselves apart from other Catholics with comparative differences in regard to holiness, receptivity to grace (!) and authenticity etc. It is human nature for all of us to align with groups of like minded, yes, but is that a good thing for a Catholic forum to promote? The conversation frequently turns ugly. And all the stickys and admonitions in the world will not change this inclination to align along distinctions between people and practices. Then you have the curious and the RCIA candidates and new converts etc…who see this scenario and discover something about Catholicism that may be a huge turn off. I think it is important, that the forum assume a first time reader or beginner is always present, and wondering what Catholicism is all about.

Why can’t folks who like the EF, for instance, discuss the topic in the liturgy and sacraments forum. Music, likewise.

That is exactly where it used to be. For years actually. In fact the Traditional Forum’s original purpose, which was stated on the topics page was discussion concerning the Extraordinary Form of the Latin Rite and Traditional customs. The sub forum was created because often the Liturgy and Sacraments Section became nothing more than discussions on the Extraordinary Form and comparisons or it and the Ordinary Form, which at times turned very ugly and opinionated on both sides.

I notice that it has been changed to what it is today. Would it be too much to ask why?

I spoke too soon. There was indeed another created last night. And most of these new thread-creators are veteran CAF members, too. :banghead:

If one goes to the home page and looks, each forum has a one line description of what belongs there. The administration has posted under Traditional Catholicism,** “Discussion of traditions and customs of the Roman Catholic rite”**

I would be happy to answer questions. Just send them to me via PM. I do not wish to turn this into a dialogue thread. I just wanted to share my concern. We’re off track again and need to get back on track.

Thank you for your kindness and cooperation.

Google still subtitles this forum as a place to discuss the EF specifically, in case you didn’t know.
