What happens if one remains in mortal sin for a long time?

What happens spiritually to a person who remains in an active state of mortal sin for many years and continues to take communion and act as if there is nothing wrong?

Is neurosis an earthly symptom of this duration?

If so, once driven neurotic or worse, mad, is there any return to a state of grace? Don’t you need some basic mental health inorder to actively seek and find the Grace of God?
 
Hi,

To sin mortally is primarily a spiritual matter and not a psychological one. If the person knowingly receives Holy Communion in the state of mortal sin, he sins mortally every time he does so. Such sin does not necessarily lead to mental illness. But it does lead to greater evil for the person—again IF the person is knowingly receiving the Eucharist sacrilegiously. Should the person repent sincerely, he will always be forgiven.
