What happens if the priest runs out of the Eucharist?

I recently went to a Mass on a Saturday afternoon. During the Eucharist the Priest ran out of the Eucharist. He at first started to divide the host in two, I think. Then he decided to have the church just drink the wine. I looked at the line and decided that by the time I got up there, they would be out of wine as well. So my question is what happens in this case, as well as, does this happen often? I really has puzzled me since. I am a convert from the Mormon religion and was very active at one time. I’d been out of the Catholic church for some time. When I went back this happened. I just really need a good explanation of what happened and what it means. Thank you in advance.
