What happens if you die in sin?

What happens if, after a long life of living as a good Catholic, and regularly confessing your sins, and trying as hard as you can to not sin, you commit a sin – lets say, taking the Lords name in vain – and then die in a car accident before you get a chance to confess it? But you already felt repentant and planned on confessing as soon as possible? Where does your soul go?

Well, ultimately only God has the answer to your question. But my two sense might offer that if you were a good Catholic and received the sacraments regularly then your intention would have been to confess those sins, since they define a flaw that you wouldn’t want to define you. Mortal sin is a complete rejection of God and if one remains in that state at the point of death then they would remain that way for all of eternity.

There really is no black and white answer to your question but I would lean more towards knowing God’s mercy in line with that person’s intent and then hoping for the best…teachccd
 
  1. First know that not all sins of misusing the Lords Name…are mortal (such as is its misuse in blaspheming or under oath in court etc)… (see my post on profanity for detail) …not that we should do so!
  2. One can have the grace of perfect contrition out of love of God (see the CCC under confession) which restores one before confession (the intent of confessing in included here of course). (and thus one will end up with God)
  3. God can give us grace even in our last moments…we need to one the one hand not fall into “presumption” (Jesus tells us to watch!) on the other hand we need to always have hope and confidence in God (Jesus told us the story of the Shepherd and lost sheep…and read the parable of the lost coin too…)
 
Someone who has lived his life as a loving person believing in the goodness and mercy of the Lord would not in all likelihood reject God at the last moment.

St, Catherine tells us that a person falling off a horse had time to repent of his sins before he hit the ground and died.

Surely if you lived and loved God throughout your life, God would grant you the same grace. Remember the last words of the Hail Mary… pray for us sinners now and at the hour of death…
