What happens to converts out of the Church?

Hi. Are catholics that convert out of the Church in a state of mortal sin and going to hell if they don’t rejoin the Church and repent? Me and my parents have some relatives who left the Church after getting married, so I told my parents that they were in a state of mortal sin because they knew the truth of God’s Church but left it anyway. Am I right? Thanks for the help.
