This question came to my mind when considering that the Pope holds the office of Saint Peter on behalf of Christ.

When Christ returns what will become of the pope’s position, since Christ will be here in person.

I can’t see any issue there at all. The Pope is the successor of St Peter, who was chosen by Christ. St Peter was around when Christ around. The Pope is the bishop chosen to guide the other bishops and steer our Church, under the direction of the Holy Spirit… There is no issue at all, the Pope is a man, and a sinner like the rest of us. Why would there be an issue when Christ returns?

So will the pope need to step down, meaning that there will be no vicar or head of the church as now Christ will resume the headship.

If so what then becomes of the Pope and the church hierarchy.

You are assuming that a Pope is free from judgement with this question. There may be some of them that may have chosen hell by their own free will in accordance with catholilc theology. There is no rule in the catholic books that say a Pope can not go to hell that I am aware of.
