When a priest who is in a religious order, like the Jesuits, becomes a bishop or pope, what happens to their vow of obedience? Is it somehow lifted? Is it life long? If so, does that give their provincial authority over them?

Hi,

The ultimate superior of every religious order is the pope. Although Pope Francis has not been under his provincial since he was made a bishop, he is now his provincial’s superior.

Fr. Vincent Serpa, O.P.
