Are they excommunicated? Does a Catholic have to renounce their religion? Does anyone know what the ramifications are?
Sort of.Eccommunicatos are prohibited from recieving commnuion. Excommunication puts you outside of the Church. You may attend mass in a state of excommunication, but you may not recieve the sacraments until it is lifted. I belive the proper phrase is: Extra ecclesium nulla salis. Outside the Church there is no salvation.
Not necessarily.A Catholic who formally joins another church puts himself in a state of apostasy…
CCC 2089 said:**2089 ***Incredulity *is the neglect of revealed truth or the willful refusal to assent to it. “*Heresy *is the obstinate post-baptismal denial of some truth which must be believed with divine and catholic faith, or it is likewise an obstinate doubt concerning the same; *apostasy *is the total repudiation of the Christian faith; *schism *is the refusal of submission to the Roman Pontiff or of communion with the members of the Church subject to him.”
