What happens when a fallen-away Catholic marries an atheist?

My son is a baptized Catholic who has fallen away from the church. He is marrying an atheist in a civil ceremony. If he will agree to having his marriage blessed should I pursue this even if he is no longer practicing? How does the church view our family attending the ceremony? He knows of our heartache over his decision.
