What has happened to Genuflection?

King Alfred, your comments on the “sneaky little additions” reminds me of my parish. Around the time of the Our father, A large majority hold hands and then at the Doxology, they all raise their hands up. I have yet to figure if they are imitating the priests posture or what. With regards to genuflection, Alot of folks seem to be embarassed to be seen kneeling in reverence in front of others. Plus, sometimes it seems like the clergy aren’t sure whether to bow or Genuflect. I have seen Priests behind the altar facing the back of the tabernacle, and then bow to it rather then genuflect. It’s confusing to me:confused:

What is the official “ruling” on genuflection these days?

Is this another tradition that has been done away with?

I recently attended a funeral at my hometown parish church and was amazed at how hardly anyone bothered to genuflect when they entered the pews. I think I saw 3 people bother to do it.

I find this objectionable and in the utmost of poor taste.

What ELSE are they going to do away with next?
I think the main problem with genuflection is that the post vatican 2 church remodels basically removed the communion rails and relocated the tabernacle from behind the altar to a remote area. With the blessed sacrament removed from the main church there was no longer any reason to genuflect because our Lord is no longer there. I have noticed that the trend is now becoming to put the tabernacle back behind the altar, at least I notice this in my own diocese and people are begining to genuflect again. In regards to the comment about people raising arms during the our father I remember reading that only the celebrant has the authority to do that procedure but I am not totally sure.

In my parish, most people genuflect (or bob or bow if they have bad knees like me) when entering the pews. But after mass you could get trampled if you try. There’s only one aisle that everyone crowds into at once. Why? I don’t know. Lack of education? I have asked the last three pastors to address the issue but they haven’t. They are outside the door and I guess they don’t believe how bad it is.
