What have you seen to be the most difficult scripture to be believed
 
God asking Abraham to sacrifice Isaac is right at the top. Make that a merciful God doing this.

This has been hard for me to fathom, but I am starting to be able to understand it now finally, I think. Taking a very western rational literal interpretation is not gong to do the trick.
 
All the people who are 700+ years old.

I have asked a bunch of “experts” about this…including a call in to an EWTN favorite, and got all sorts of gobbletygook about how sin made us live shorter, and God could make us live that long (true, yes).
I found a satisfactory and detailed explanation from a KofC booklet. Written before VII (go figure), but still…why is it so difficult for experts in this day and age to just admit that people do not live to be 700+ years old?

I’ve heard some say that years back at the time of this OT writing were closer to a lunar type of reckoning system.

Another theory is that these ages were not intended to be taken in a literal sense, but you are probably familiar with thse ideas, I assume.

I guess I will never be a good Christian because I love my father, mother, brothers and sisters. I would never hate them or wish them harm. Even if they fall into sin, I will still love them and pray for them and have hope that they will do the right thing.

Just because something is hard does not mean it’s false. Now, following those words (especially in the gospels) is a different story.
 
There is literary style and expression in the context of semitic culture to keep in mind.
 
1 Thessalonians 5 -1:3
"1 About times and dates, brothers, there is no need to write to you

2 for you are well aware in any case that the Day of the Lord is going to come like a thief in the night.

3 It is when people are saying, ‘How quiet and peaceful it is’ that sudden destruction falls on them, as suddenly as labor pains come on a pregnant woman; and there is no escape. "

What does this mean? If we build up peace we build up the way to the end? But solution through war means murder which is sin, so can one not promote peace?
 
My friend it’s not that we can’t promote peace. Jesus was speaking rather of the world growing greater in it sin and living a false peace. This includes a world without religion, government… Etc. A great deception of the end which will feel and look like peace, but truly it is a ravenous wolf. We live in a time where peace on earth would be an end to all good authority and no church. No “Christians to stop our progress”, the world desires. Be strong and always read in context (not saying you don’t) but we must not let our emotion overtake a passage as many in the schismatic world have. I don’t mean to necessarily say you’ve taken an extreme emotional approach, but the influence can be truly overwhelming. Peace 🙂

I am very emotional, you guess me right and this passage does make me sad. I take it like you said - it’s about false peace. Anyway we cannot say today the world is filled with peace, most of the world is at war one with the other.
Am I wrong when I take this passage as another evidence that those who present exact dates for a second coming are all false prophets? Because here it says no dates will be provided (by God) so everyone presenting them are either deluded by the devil or they lie for certain benefits.

I’ve heard those referred to lunar cycles, which would make more sense as many people would have been in their 50’s, a much more reasonable “old” age back then, when illness, infection, or wolves could strike anyone at any time. Another explanation - do you know many Jewish people? The culture values great stories and they tend to take artistic license with some of their tales. Chanukah? There may actually have been enough oil for 8 days, who knows? Either way, lets gamble for gelt and eat latkes!
 
I struggle with the parable Jesus told about the workers all starting at different times, but getting paid the same.

It’s good fodder for meditation, however.
 
You are correct. ANYONE who tries to allude to some rapture (a ridiculous doctrine) date or date that Jesus is coming is a false prophet. I do believe many will continue with these foolish dates and “prophecies”. That’s how many will be deceived… The devil himself can give prophecies and make them come true. And hey emotions aren’t bad, just give them to Our Beloved Savior. He knows and doesn’t want us to be deceived by our readers emotions. Walk circumspectly and remember that this world is supposed to get worse so do not dismay. It just means satans more twisted in his whiny pants that he has a short time 🙂

I don’t think there’s anything wrong with being sad. The rich man spoke to Jesus and came away sad when he realised the gravity of Jesus’s teachings. They are not supposed to be easy; we must be willing to do anything for his sake.
