I can’t imagine why a thread was posted, and allowed to remain, that is at its heart completely negative. I interpreted the list as all the ways we “should” conform to the OP’s personal vision of Catholicity. Certainly some of the points are dogmatic and theological but many more are related only to practices and personal preferences.

Maybe if the OP needed to vent, he/she should have vented in an email to him/herself.

There is no redeeming feature to this entire thread – none.

5 (if done at Mass or other Church function, else just don’t hang out with these women), 7, 11 are valid concerns only because they impact others’ ability to get as much out of the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass as possible.
**
The rest are absolutely, completely known of your business. **

Pray and as today’s readings tell you, be humble, and try to see the planks in your own eye (your own faults) and work on them instead of being a busy-buddy always looking for fault in others. We all need to work on examining ourselves and not judging others, as Jesus said.
Well said!! I eat mints during Mass. I suppose that means I won’t be liked by some people. But I eat the mints because the pain meds I take cause extreme dry mouth which leads to disease (I’ve lost one tooth already although it’s in the back so it’s not noticeable) and also to a horrid case of halitosis.

The mints are medicine. I am also diabetic. If I start to go into a reaction I will eat candy to raise my blood sugar. It’s medicine. I can receive Communion. I haven’t broken my fast.

And it’s nobody’s business but God’s and mine.

Sure there is. We get to talk about mints and Dune.

Wow! Amen brother! A non-Catholic who was the only one to acknowledge that I work for the Catholic Church…😦

You know rightlydivide, you are so correct. It is so different from the outside as oppose when you are on the inside. As my late uncle Richard used to say to me: The hardest material one will ever work with is people. He is SO right. I am not trying to judge people, but my list are things that can be rectified. And yes you are right, I do take my faith serious and it does frustrate me and hurt me.
Hello Nicea,
In what aspect/ function do you serve? division? Show me a N.T. verse stately rightly divide?

It’s not all about you, if you have a problem with people in the congregation bring it to the Priest or Pastor, they are trained in dealing with people.

God bless,
John

Hi sailor,
Perfect example of the people around you not understanding, but becoming frustrated over you eating mints, during Mass and then going to receive.
I think they may rather see you faint! The Domincan Sisters we had as teachers would say during class, "Next time make sure you bring enough mints for everyone, or don’t bring’em at all! Without a note!

God bless,
John

Why are you offended?
I do not presume to answer for anyone, but I can offer that I felt uncomfortable with the entire topic. It seemed to bring more questions than answers.
Thank you for posting this answer. I think you’re right about this thread bringing more questions but I don’t think that’s necessarily a bad thing. 😉

I like Catholics, but I’m glad to read this thread because it gives me ideas on ways I might avoid scandalizing other people.

This is a funny thread, but honestly we should look at all the great stuff about Catholicism and not focus on the no-goodnicks of the brand. Every Church has goofballs in it and people who aren’t serious. The Catholic Church has a ton of great people in the ranks, we should focus on them. Just like the clergy. It does not good to say how we hate child-molesters, the ultra minority. That’s a no-brainer. Who doesn’t hate them? We should focus on the good clergy, which are many 🙂
But isn’t that covered in threads with headings like “What I like about the Catholic Church?” This thread is focused on the not so good and it’s making some Catholics uncomfortable. Perhaps that’s not so bad?

I was offended by the list. I don’t know why that candle is there! There are a million things I don’t know. As a revert who didn’t understand the Church when I left, I am near the beginning of my path toward God. I didn’t even know there was a candle! I’ve never noticed it.

So yeah, I was offended. The list seems to be very judgmental to me. But that is my opinion. I suppose it’s anyone’s right to make a list like that but they should expect people to be offended.

I guess I took the bait, but I didn’t know it was bait (as nobody does until they are caught). :o

I want to say that being offended is a feeling. It pops into one’s head and it’s just there. There is no control over the feeling showing up. But letting it sit there and fester can cause a lot of problems. I’ll find out why that candle is there and I’ll continue to grow in knowledge about the Church. So it’s not all negative.
You’re right. You can’t help how you feel. And neither can the OP. I wish you well as you continue on your search for knowledge. 👍

Actually that wasn’t me----but as a new convert, I once had such a bad dry throat that I couldn’t talk without hacking up half a lung—but I refused to take a cough drop: “NO! I ain’t goin’ to Hell for no piece of candy!!!”

Later on a priest told me it would have been okay. :rotfl:

Yeah, it’s kinda judgmental. These are observations that bug you, and clearly you think such things as unacceptable. Others see the same things and don’t dislike any or all of these. 🤷

It probably would have been better to say why they bug you and suggest how to correct them. 🙂

🍿
Yes I could have used a different heading, but goes to show you how most here are offended, instead of offering soultions. Precisely why the problems continue because so many have the “nobody is going to tell me” anything attitude.

Oh I see but 7 and 11 are your business only? Exactly! And examing ourselves is also acknowledging our weaknesses, not the attitude: It is none of your business. It is my business as a leader of ministry.

Whether I am capapable of worship and adoring is not the issue here. Worry? It is not a worry, but observations. Why are so many of you getting offended? And are we entering God’s House or a barn? Answering the cell during Mass? At least get up and answer it outside,if it is an emergency.

Common sense does come a long way when utilized correct.
What makes you think we are getting offended? Does contradicting or disagreeing with you mean to you that we are offended? If so, you might want to look the word up. As far as entering a house or a barn, don’t forget that Jesus was born in a manger (barn) so that argument does not mean much. As far as answering a cell durring Mass, I think ALL cell phones should be turned off before entering ANY church. Also, do you really think that Jesus would care if we dressed up before we see him? The Jesus I know, says “come as you are”👍 It is better to go to church/attend mass however you are dressed than to not attend at all.

I understand and take it into consideration. 👍

Well, I offered a small solution. But perhaps it’s just not something people that complain want to be bothered with. However, I think some people don’t know what they don’t know. And those that do, can find polite ways to help inform. Such as a simple posting in the church bulletin with reminders. These could include, sources for people to look up for further info. Our priest writes up reminders all the time. I think they are really appreciated.

Wow. I’m feeling pretty rotten now. We very seldom can come to Mass as we only have one vehicle and my husband works on Saturdays and Sundays. And when we do, since my son with special needs is not accustomed to going, he tends to make a scene (he has special needs). He absolutely insists on trying to genuflect, but he is very uncoordinated with leg braces so it becomes a long, distracting thing for everyone. And he doesn’t quite understand whispering so he tends to talk a bit loudly throughout. And during the sign of peace part, he wants to shake hands with everyone and if we try to break him off when its time for the Lamb of God… well, another little scene. And there is no crying room or such to retreat to.

Our Priest wears sandals or even flip flops and shorts under his vestments so I guess even he can’t make it off Nicea’s list. We have no air-conditioning in our tiny church, and when it reaches 109 degress, who can blame him? But he sorta strips off his vestment as soon as he reaches the back of the church. I go so seldom, but I’m sure I’ve worn sandals myself. And my son, 14 years old, wears shorts – he overheats and it is so much easier with the leg braces.

I try to tell myself that my dingy clothing (we are pretty stressed financially), and unruly child and all will be forgiven by the others in our church because they know we are only doing our best. But then I read this list of judgments and I wonder who in our parish is judging us similarly? If it was just a cranky old person, the kind that routinely throw dirty looks at others, I could shrug it off - we have had to do it often enough. But if Nicea works for the church… well, that puts another spin on things. Perhaps we really aren’t welcome and the only reason no one’s talked to us about it is they are being polite?

I am not offended. I am profoundly disturbed. Nicea makes me feel unwelcome and unloved. He/she makes me feel judged not worthy to be a Catholic.

My Mom is Jewish. Once we were camping with the Girl Scouts, and she was assigned to drive the little Catholic girls to Mass on Sunday. We were 4 days camping, no bathing, smelly and dirty/dusty. My mother respectfully stood in the back of the church (she would have stood outside, but it was cold). The Priest was just starting Mass, welcoming everyone and saw my mother standing in the back. He walked down the aisle and took her hand and drew her to a pew in front. She muttered, “no Father, I am Jewish and very dusty and dirty.” He just laughed and said, I know a Man and a woman who had the same afflictions, and they are the reason I am here. Come… you are our guest and you are welcome."

My mother never forgot that Priest. She retold the story to us over and over. When I converted to Catholicism, I worried how my Jewish mother would take it. She just smiled and said if I “had” to be a Christian, thank God I chose to be Catholic!

Do you think there are still people like that in our Church? Or is Nicea becoming the norm?
