What I like about the Church

My husband and I just figured out something that we like about the Catholic Church.

At lunch, we were discussing the $4.15/gal gas and wondering what’s going to happen in the next few years to the working poor and the lower middle class, and even the middle/middle class like us!

I described some articles I had read about “localization,” in which many people will live near a large company that employs them (e.g., my hospital employs several thousand) and more stores, restaurants, etc. will be within walking distance of these “locales.” That way, people don’t have to drive so far to work, play, shop, go to school, etc.

Then my husband said, “See, the Catholic Church has had the right idea all along–neighborhood parishes within dioceses, so that everyone will be geographically close to Mass!”

The Catholic Church is green!

Back to the old days of parish boundaries.

You know, “back in the day” it wasn’t such a bad thing. You moved someplace, and there was no question where you went to Church.

Much simpler, no? 😉

I am rather late to this thread, but I absolutely love the universality of the Church. I don’t just mean that one can find Catholics all over the world, but that there is something for everyone, of every age, intellectual level, economic status, etc. We are all one in Christ.

There are so many different forms of spirituality one can tap into–from the contemplative to the charismatic, from the simple to the highly theological and everything in between. One can find their place in the Catholic Church. Yet we are all united in our common beliefs and doctrines under the guidance and authority of the Magesterium.

We have 2000 years of Tradition and spirituality to draw on. We have the Sacred Scriptures–the Word of God. We have the most profound thinkers in the world in our history. We have the best of Scripture scholarship. There is a richness and depth in Catholicism that just cannot be found in other religious traditions. We truly have the fullness of the truth.

There is nothing like being at Mass and knowing that we are surrounded by a “great cloud of witnesses”–the angels and saints and the living and those who have passed on all worshipping God
together in the great Communion of Saints. And knowing that all over the world, 24/7 someone is celebrating the Mass or Divine Liturgy in a continual praise of God.

And of course–the Eucharist–the Living God with us, in His very flesh and blood. What more could one want?

The Catholic Church is the only church that makes me comfortable. I would go sometimes with my grandmother to Trinity Bible Church in Edgerton OH and was comfortable there but always kept longing for the Catholic Church and to learn what we believe and what the church is all about. I know I went to Catholic School for 6 years, but some stuff was never told about some stuff. I went to a few other churches as guest but didn’t feel comfortable. Most notably the Marantha Chapel in Harlan IN. The Catholic Church makes me feel that I have a family outside blood relation.

Going out to dinner with my wife on Friday night, wearing my “cool to be catholic” T-shirt…and having the waiter (who is young enough to be my grandson) say “I like your shirt, sir”…🙂

Sound like a cool t-shirt alright! Where did you find it? Would love to get one.

Try this one. My parish had a T-Shirt sale after the masses, with proceeds going to the teen A.C.T.S retreat. The T-Shirt said "Kiss me - I’m Catholic.

I checked an there aren’t any on ebay today. But there is another cute one that says “Does this shirt make me look Catholic?”

Also, the t shirt I have can be found on this site:
