I thought I’d like to start a thread in which Protestants could say what they liked about the RCC. There’s a lot of hurt and debate, so such a thread, I thought, could be a healing thing.

- Music: I am assembling a good collection of Requiem Masses. I am especially fond of Mozart’s Requiem and Verdi’s Requiem. I am also enraptured by the music of Lucrezia Vizzana and the chants of the Benedictine Monks Of Santo Domingo De Silos. I like to learn the words so I know what they’re singing about.
- Art: I’m sure no one can deny that the RCC has been the inspiration, patron, and curator of much (if not most) of the greatest visual art in Western Civilization.
- Nuns: Many sisters have been friends over the years and I have treasured their love and compassion. One of these, Sister Alice Michelle Howa, played a special role in my spiritual development through the example of her life. Nowadays, so many sisters don’t wear habits. I think of them as stealth guerillas for God. Additionally, it’s nuns who did the hard work of building up so many schools and hospitals on the frontier when the US was young. And they’ve kept at it. Despite persecution (the Maria Monk hoax, the opposition to St. Katherine Drexel’s order’s service to Native Americans) these brave, noble women gave/give everything to God’s children. Unsung heroines, Thank God for all of you. God, bless us with more vocations!
