What I Love About the Catholic Church

You’re not rubbing anything in, don’t worry. My wife and I are good to go now, no worries about NFP, thank God. More often is our motto…:cool:👍

I think the Catholic Church has a lot of good points. I think the biggest 20th century advance of the Catholic Church is its acceptance of human rights, democracy and the rule of law, something it rejected or questioned in the 19th century and earlier. For a church that burned heretics, persecuted Jews and refused to countenance the freedom of religion and opinion in earlier times, I think this is a remarkable advance. I think the other good thing about the church is the richness of the spiritual and prayer traditions (reflected in the mystical and contemplative theology and prayer) and the rich sacramental life. I think Western Christendom lost a lot when it was sundered by schism in the Reformation and much of the spiritual and sacramental richness of the church was lost in the return to the scriptures and iconoclasm of the Reformation.

The Catholic Church also produces much excellent theology and outstanding theologians. Pope Benedict, Kark Rahner, Hans urs Von Balthasar, Thomas Aquinas, Henri de Lubac and countless other Catholic theologians have produced brilliant ideas which illuminate the patrimony of the church. This is in spite of a rather repressive atmosphere involving the silencing or censure of many progressive theologians (i.e. the cases with Kung and Curran).

I also think the Catholic Church has helped to produced some outstanding philosophers and the church has the most positive relationship between faith and reason, as evidenced by the work of people like Jacques Maritain, Gabriel Marcel, Thomas Aquinas, and many others. I actually pretty much entirely agree with the theology proposed by Thomas Aquinas, except on some points (i.e. his negative views on women and their capacity to reason).

Despite the weaknesses of the church I think it has produced many good contributions to Christianity as a whole. One must also count the treasures of music, art and liturgy the church possess.

My favourite Mass of the year is the Easter Vigil, especially if it doesn’t begin until about 11pm. 🙂

Holy Week and the Easter Triduum is truly the highlight of the year for me.

This year was our first year…we went to the Easter Triduum and loved everything about it…well except for almost totalling our car on Good Friday.

Next year we will be confirmed at the Easter Vigil so I’m REALLY looking forward to it!

Ahhh…I was over that eons ago…especially after I wandered into the Traditional site and almost got flamed for asking for tolerance for those Catholics that are on different places in their faith:eek:

Besides…I think we also agree on a common dislike for the Yankees:D

I am a semi convert (if thats possible), in as much as I was baptized Catholic as an infant, but never catechized.

My grandfather was a Presbyterian minister, and I have attended a variety of chuches at different times in my life. Pick one, and I’ve probably been to at least one worship service.

In addition to the things that have already been stated, like the Eucharist, tradition, history, universality, for me, it had to be the “straight forwardness”.

When I went through RCIA, I was the guy in the middle of the class, that always had a question, or statement, or experience that would prove the Catholic Church wrong. Unforturnately, or actually fortuantely in my case, it was me that was proven wrong.

There are a lot of things I love about the Catholic Church but the first thing that popped into my mind is the wonderful smell of my Church. You could blindfold me, drive me around in circles then drop me off at my church and I’d know exactly where I was. 🙂
 
I love the doctrines and a lot more…

i love the church because people has the freedom to decide…

I’ve been assitting at two parishes: my local “OF” parish and my favourite “EF” parish.
One smells like incense.
One smells like Purell. :cool:
