Yes, this is an icon of the slaughter of the Holy Innocents. It also depicts the death of Zachariah and the saving of St. John the Baptist and St. Elizabeth from the troops of King Herod. The imagery is from the description in the Protoevangelion of St. James. The Protoevangelion is considered non-canonical by both the Orthodox and Catholic Churches. It was declared non-canonical in the Gelasian Decretal. Thus it cannot be read in the Liturgy. The Protoevangelion has been used as the source of many traditions in the feasts of the Church. The Nativity of the Theotokos, the Presentation of Our Lady at the Temple and much of the imagery of the icon of the Nativity of Our Lord come from the Protoevangelion.

It certainly IS used in the Liturgy. Both Catholic & Orthodox. It is quoted from in the texts of Orthros & Vespers for many feasts of the church.😉
 
The key word in the sentence you were kind enough to quote is “read”. I did not mean that references or qoutes were not taken from the text. It is non-canonical, so it cannot be proclaimed as a reading in the Liturgy, in the same way as the Old Testament, Epistle, or Gospel readings are. It can be, and is, quoted in the general text of the Liturgy. It is also extensively used, as I stated in the earlier post, as the source of many of our feasts such as the presentation of the Theotokos in the Temple. The point I was making was that it is not read or used in the same way that canonial scripture is used in the Liturgy

This is Ikon of Infanticide which is what brefoktonia meaning in Greek. This much different from usual ikon of the 14000 martyrs of Beflehem which is in Ukraina and Russia. This ikon has used widely to oppose aborting: Rather than killing, it shows holiness in white robes of those boys killed for Christ.

Interesting. Thank you. I know that sometmies an icon of Rachel is used to represent the killing of the Holy Innocents.

I disagree that it has been used as the source, rather, that it records the Traditions passed down by the Church regarding Mary, Joseph, Elizabeth and Zechariah.
